Cece have you ever tried Peet's?
In the 80s I drank LOTS of coffee and Peet's rocked!
Don't want to exile your Folgers - it's the favorite of a good friend of mine - just suggesting a variety....

Chelle - you said:

"I had to laugh at your - see ya, later, and now I'm really running behind! It's great to be busy, isn't it?

Is that deer actually laying down in your yard? He's right at home, isn't he.

Lava rock! Arggggh! That's just one step above pulling up weed-choked and seemingly cemented-in landscape fabric. That's some very, very hard work.

What's your soil like? Clay and moist, or sandy and dry?"

1- I'm not really all that busy, but I do have one relatively new but really good friend who sometimes wants me along for "moral support", which really means keeping her peeled off the ceiling, on errands. and she called in a tizzy about a purchase decision...... So I had to hurry.

2- YES, that young deer AND ITS TWIN moved right in through the gap in the fence and I STILL have their decendants. I hate to deny them their source of food that they grew up relying on. But enough is enough. When I see them in person I always tell them I love them, but the buffet is closed. Sad

3 - Yes, the only thing worse would be landscape fabric! The lava rock itself isn't so heavy, but it DOES stop a shovel. Thumbs down so you have to "scoop" it. OH my BACK!!! Luckily, I got permission form the empty lot owner down the street to dump it over his back hill. Before that, I couldn't figure out how I would dispose of it...

and 4 - YES, it's #%*^!$% clay.............. Did I mention my back? AND I actually found a 2' wide, long as the width of my yard, SEAM OF COAL right at the surface. CRIMENY! I didn't even know coal could be found at the surface! Did I mention my back????

Yep. Heavy clay - you can't lift the shovel if it's wet, you can't toss it off the shovel if you do happen to lift it (because it sticks fast), and you can't pierce the surface if it's dry. However, it's good stuff when it's somewhere in between soaked and completely dry. Hilarious! We have it here, too; can you tell?

I'm "claw"ing in Scott's Top Soil ($2.12 a bag, tax included) and HOUSE BUNNY POO with its associated hay. Got earthworms aplenty now!

This is just a shot of my 1 year old dicentra at the back fence.
I scavenged this concrete block and another just like it.
Never seen this kind of concrete block before.
Standing upright like this, it maked me think of Mr.Wright's sculptures!

My lovely euphorbia 'chamelion' behind an invasive garlic mustard. I always let the garlic mustard grow to about this size, then I pull it, clip the roots into the garbage, NOT the compost (it contains chemicals harmful to beneficial fungi in the soil) and I give the leaves to my friend who makes an awesome pesto of them, which she shares with me! Yum.

Euphorbia myrsenitis is on the invasive lists, but I just love it!
Not least because it is evergreen.
Here it is in my front yard, which is totally surrounded by concrete.
It is especially pretty this time of year!

That is a very unique and cool-looking piece of concrete; I've never seen one like it. Nice find!

When I got some of my plants, I was up against the winter to get them in the ground, so I put them, temporarily just in the ground where I could tell them apart to spread them around later.
Here are the spring blooming 'Flower record' crocus.
At the bottom left are the still green crocus sativa.
Winter didn't really ever come here.
My buddleia didn't even go dormant, so I could dig it and move it.
In years past I've dug them and found scant root structure - but I didn't dare this year.

I wonder if the fall crocus will even bloom this coming fall...

Garlic mustard is the MOST nutritious (for humans) green ever tested, Above kale. And it IS tasty! It is biennial so it doesn't flower the first year. The trick to total removal is to pull it in year one or when it first comes up in the spring, before it flowers. The seeds can lie in wait in the soil for 5 years..... I met a botanical PhD candidate who is using it for her thesis....

I've scavenged a lot of cobblestones, too.
Here, they used "Belgian block", which has wonderful stripes.
This one has (I hope you can see) a little "bowl" in its side, which I thought would be wonderful for the butterflies to puddle! Big Grin

And here are the "weeds".
I LOVE the wild violets that show up in the back lawn.
Thumb of 2012-04-12/crittergarden/b05a96

It was a lawn from1920 until I got here.
I'm trying to turn it into anything BUT a mowing chore.
Anyway, I like these wild violets so much I move them into flowerbeds.
This time of year they bloom all pretty, but also the rest of the growing season their green green leaves make nice "filler" in the perennial beds.

I agree Hurray!

I love the puddle block for butterflies idea.

I don't have any of those, but I'm trying to grow a cup plant for critter water. Dew and rain collects in the leaves, I believe.

More violets...
