Todd, to tell you the truth, this plant (these plants) really confuses me as in some circles Paph moquettianum is known as Paph. glaucophyllum var. moquettianum. So when you Google Paph moquettianum, Paph. glaucophyllum , your Paph. primulinum var. purpurascens and Kathy's Paph. liemianum and look at all the variations that show up for each, they all look like lets pick a name and call it that. Some seem to have a distinct white halo around dorsal sepal and others have stripes or both. The bloom on mine when I got it had deep burgundy spots on the pouch which was a deeper pink and and smattering of spots on dorsal sepal so as can be the case there are variations between blooming.

To go along in the same theme I also have a Paph (delanatii x moquettianum) which is very close to opening and always wondered why a primary hybrid did not have a name. If moquettianum is a variation of glaucophyllum then (Paph. glaucophyllum x Paph delenatii) = Paph. Delophyllum. Ursula to the rescue, how does RHS sort out this?

Todd, Calanthe sieboldii looks like it will put on a nice show. How did you over winter it?

bree, the picture you have shown definitely has delenatii in its makeup. It looks quite similar to my (delanatii x moquettianum) cross.

Kathy, I not sure what you called your plant before but I love the red spots on white.

Dtps. Nobby's Pink Lady x New Cinderella, this one is really peloric, it's hard to tell which is the real lip.

I almost bought a peloris one like this last month. I always like pelorics. So pretty, they remind me of lycastes.

You all had an interesting exchange last night while we were out!
Todd, I love the Ascocenda Kirk Hoo, and the Calanthe sieboldii looks very promising!
Kathy, I would be doing a happy dance too - seeing your minis budding!

I am hit or miss on blooming Paphs. I did a little better this Winter on a couple of them. Regarding Phrags, Jason Fischer is still blooming and I do find the Phrag Sorcerer's Apprentice and Phrag Sorcerer's Fire not difficult at all, but the latter get to be very large plants. ( and Sorcerer's Fire is nicer than Apprentice, I think) I am still waiting patiently on my Phrag kovachii hybrids., one doesn't look too hot, but the other looks really nice, it has got to bloom one of these days.....

Ken, I had to look up your "how does RHS sort this out "
First I looked up glaucophyllum at the Kew check list. ( I tried to add the links here but they didn't work with that site, so you have to fill them in please )

http://apps.kew.org/wcsp/home....
glaucophyllum is the accepted name /in bold letters

moquetteanum is not written in bold, so I would think it is not an accepted name and that is your answer?
(Orchidspecies.com lists is as syn.)

delenatii x glaucophyllum is Delophyllum as you said

And now some breakfast... Smiling

Thanks Ursula. Checking the KEW site at present moquetteanum shows up as Paphiopedilum glaucophyllum var. moquetteanum until somebody moves it again or not.

Ken, I didn't see that, you are way ahead of me.
But then I don't think the RHS cares about any varieties when registering hybrids, so it would still only use the name glaucophyllum.

On a related note -I find it amazing that an alba form AND the regular form of a species (used in hybridizing) would still result in the same grex name.

"you are way ahead of me" is not the term that comes to my mind as I have gone into the RHS site and just got bogged down, which is why I was looking for your help. Sometimes after you show me (us) the way, I can root around and find additional info. Again thanks.

With regard to the RHS site, I think this is one of their shortfalls to not include these variations or at least link this info in some way or maybe they do I just don't know how to find it.

I just went into RHS International Orchid Register and found Paph. moquetteanum as if it is a species on its own. But when crossed with delenatii, there is nothing. One of the problems is the substitution of E and I in the spelling of orchid names, as in this case, when it comes to searching for info on these sites. Paph moquettianum or Paph moquetteanum

Am I still confused, you bet.

I have Koopowitz's slipper book, when I get home I'll see what he says.

In regards to my calanthe, this past fall it put it, along with my Bletilla, in the root cellar at work...1-4 C all winter. I brought it into the warmth only 2 weeks ago. It tried to bloom 2 years ago but blasted. I hope it works this year. I have two others that I treated the same way but neither of them will be blooming this year.

You all are so ahead of me with the name stuff. I just try to write down what's on the labels. Another nice order arrived today from Marble Branch Farms. This is Dendrobium Andree Millar (atriviolaceum X convolutum).

Harold Koopowitz comes right out and says he considers moquettianum to be a separate species from glaucophyllum.....he claims glaucophyllum is the dullest and least interesting of the cochlopetalum group...he barely gives it 7 lines of description. He RAVES about moquettianum. Chamberlainianum no longer exists. Liemianum used to be a variety of chamberlainianum but now has its own species status. Chamberlainianum is now victoria-reginae, NOT to be confused with victoria-mariae which used to be called victoria-reginae until recently. Is all this clear as mud? At least primulinum is distinct..at least the yellow form. Blinking Confused

Wow! No wonder I was reluctant to say a word!
OrchidWiz has Paph chamberlainianum var moquettianum, Paph glaucophyllum, Paph glaucophyllum ssp.glaucophyllum, Paph victoria-reginae ssp. glaucophyllum, Paph glaucophyllum var moquettianum and Paph moquettianum as synonyms. But the pics show chamberlainianum, victoria-reginae, moquetteanum, moquettianum, glaucophyllum var. moquettianum, chamberlainianum var. latifolium, kalinae, glaucophyllum with a variety of patterns and colors on the top petal (dorsal sepal?). Help!
