I think I lost a Pleuro this summer to the heat. One leaf left.

Most of my Masdies dropped leaves too. I hope they stabilize now.

How cold did it get last night, Todd and Kathy?

No cold here but the hurricane is destroying everything...the wind just struck an hour ago and I expect electricity will go any minute. Trees are down all over...we have had 6" rain so far and winds are now reaching 75 mph....only a category 1 so I can only imagine what a 3 or better must be like! No fall colour this year as there are no leaves.....the house just shivered! And I'm hearing a strange noise on the side of the house...I expect my rain gutter is about to go!

Well the worse is over....still winds gusting to 50 mph but at 3:30 local time we had gusts to 85 mph. Loads of trees down all over eastern Newfoundland. I did not loose power but about half of the city did. Parts of Newfoundland saw 10" rain...major flooding. 27 towns have called states of emergency....many are isolated as the main highways have washed away. St. John's saw 5.5 inches of rain. Lots of flooding here too but again, I did not get any. In the garden, my potted mums are destroyed and I lost the last of the oriental lilies. I don't think I lost any parts of my single tree or my many shrubs although at times I thought my weeping Japanese maple was going to pop like an umbrella. Guess it's clean-up time tomorrow. I expect we lost lots of trees in the Botanical garden...tomorrow will be the tell-tale.

I forgot to bring in my Miltoniopsis.....they are blown across the garden...oh well, they were not happy campers...perhaps this will shock them into better growth!

Todd, I feel your pain..I used to live on the coast and every nor easter this would happen at my house. Our road would be so deep in flood water we'de be stuck for days!
Fingers crossed that the Botanical garden pulled through with only minor mishaps. Glad you are safe and sound, and hopefully, the Miltoniopsis is as well!

Oh my, Todd! It sounds wild! That is a lot of wind and rain!
Fingers crossed here too that the loss is minimal at the Botanical garden.

Summer is making a short return right now around here.

Renanetia Sunrise 'Prasong' AM/AOS is opening one of two pretty spikes. This was a terrible looking plant when I bought it in Spring 2009. The leaves were crusted over with salts and the plant was bent. I just popped it at the time into a basket and hoped for the best.
But it started to bloom soon and the new leaves are growing out clean. This is another cute Neofinetia falcata hybrid ( x Renanthera imschootiana)

Ditto on the beautiful paphs Bree...and you also have a great show Ursula.

Well the final tally was little damage to my garden other than lots of defoliated plants and virtually no more flowers for the rest of the season. the Botanical garden was not so fortunate...we lost nearly 200 trees! major devastation. It will forever change the look of the Garden. However, at least we had no physical damage to any buildings. We will probably be closed for the next 3-4 days trying to clean up the mess.
