Ken, I got the paph. gratrixianum from a division of one we have at work...it is in a 1 gallon pot and about 6 years old.

That NOID paph you have is lovely! Mty Sogo Pearl is infested with mealies and will soon have to be tossed. I've tried everything!

Jim, those orchids are spectacular! What healthy roots. My Vanda at work are downright pathetic!

Just opened is paph venustum

They sure do make us happy, don't they? I spend hours in the greenhouse, time just flies.

Blc Goldenzelle 'Lemon Chiffon' AM/AOS like to abort any spikes in my care. Glare This year it decided to grace me with one beautiful bloom. I had wished for more, but - maybe next year.

Hi Ursula, I like your grass, it's been so long since we've seen green grass here in the North East US. Are those white things on the outer edges blooms or spikes ? Or is it just the way the light is hitting the plant?

Bill, those are all dangling spikes with tiny tiny blooms. Perhaps this picture, although it isn't very sharp, might show it a little better.
This is a closer look at that small spike on the bottom of the plant in front. Many of the spikes are not fully open.
Thumb of 2011-01-30/Ursula/a81283

This Dendrochilum glumaceum has large leaves and the spikes are a lot fatter, but in essence they are similar. I like Dendrochilums, I have several and I find them graceful and also easy to bloom, since they don't need that premium sunshiny spot.

For Todd. Just found this info on Chinese Cyms on the Cloud Orchids website:
"Flower Induction
Stop all fertilization at the end of August. Use only plain water to flush the pot during the month of September. As cooler weather approaches, reduce watering slightly, and permit the plants to be a bit cooler at night. The warmer growers are less particular with this, the intermediate and cooler growers will likely produce spikes anyway, but they may not open properly. When the flowers open, return to your normal schedule and enjoy the blooms !"

I have been treating cool and warm cyms alike and fertilizing every 3 weeks here. It seems that my warm growers that bloom don't get going till late summer and they spike in fall. But I may try this next year to see if it helps to get more blooming.

hawkarica said:The Grammatophylum scriptum is a big orchid that is growing in a square wooden basket. The roots came out all sides of the basket grew straight up like a big comb-over. I haven't seen the basket in years. It is now just this big root ball with large leaves and in the summer, it will put out 3 to 4 foot spikes in all directions, each with 50 or so blooms. Here it is in bloom:

I'm lucky the scriptum variety is not as robust as the Grammatophyllum speciosum. Nonetheless, it is a chore to tote around the house. It seems to get larger as I get older which doesn't seem fair. I'm not sure how I will know when it needs to be repotted since I can't find the pot. When I do decide to repot, perhaps I'll throw a party and you all can come down to help. Whistling
