Our Spring Plant Party will be at my home in Frederick, MD, on Saturday May 7. That's the day before Mother's Day, so I hope it works for most of our friends. Note that May 14 is the big plant sale at Green Springs Garden, so no conflict for plantaholics.

Here is the main organizational thread for the swap: The thread "2016 Spring Plant Swap Party Saturday May 7 Frederick MD" in Mid Atlantic Gardening forum

This thread is for Plant Chat... It's the place to ask ask "who wants tomato seedlings?" or "does anybody have a pink daylily to share?" It's also the place to post specific requests for plants on people's lists, as well as the place to ask questions about listed plants.

We'll be adapting the ATP Seed Swaps tool for use with pre-swapping plants before the party day. This will replace our previous system of a separate thread with want/have lists. It seemed promising when we used it for the seed swap in February. Pre-arranging some trades gives more time for people to visit during the party, but it's by no means necessary, so if you'd rather just load up a random box of plants Saturday morning and come on over, that's fine. Smiling

using the SEED SWAPS TOOL

The tool is pretty intuitive, so you can just jump in! Or read this first. Smiling I know this looks like a long explanation, but it's not difficult, I just wanted to try to cover everything. If you have questions, ask on this thread. :-)

You'll find the ATP "Seed Swaps" tool is on the menu to the left, above "Goodies." Click on it!

From the main page of the tool, start by clicking on "View and Manage your Primary Swap List." Make a list of your available plants. When you start typing, you'll get a pull-down list of possible choices from the database -- that makes it go faster. Smiling You can also import plants from your ATP Plant List, if you use that tool.

Once you enroll in the swap, you'll be able to check off which ones and how many you'll bring to the swap. You have to click the check mark on the left of each plant (it turns green!) to put it into the current swap.

Here's how we're adapting the tool for plants rather than seeds. Number of Packets = Number of plants available. Use the "quantity per packet" field to indicate whether your plant is bare root, rooted cutting, seedling, trade gallon pot, division, etc. Ignore fields like "deadline to send seeds" and "cost to participate," even though that says 1 cent.

Each day of trading, you will get "tickets" to use to put "dibs" on plants from the swap list. Here's how the multiplier (set to 2) works to spread out requests: on the first day of trading, everybody will get 2 "dibs" to use to make requests from another participant. On the second day, everybody gets 4 more dibs, on the third day, 6 more, and so on. If you don't use your dibs every day, they roll over. By the day before the swap, you'll have more dibs than you can use. :-)

The "Seed Swaps" tool automatically keeps track of what you have promised to whom. It also keeps track of plants you've requested. If you change your mind about a plant, you can remove your dibs on it, and it will become available again.

Plus, as you look through other people's lists, you can put items in a "Wish List" while you wait to get "dibs" or while you figure out whether or not you have a spot in your garden for a peanut butter shrub or whatnot. Putting it on your wish list does not equal dibs on the plant, no matter how many stars you give it.

I love being able to import items from my Plant List to the swap tool. So convenient!

One thing I can't do with the swap tool is reserve plants for people.

For example, three people have asked me for parsley already but I can't set them aside as reserved. Also, @critterologist and @catmint20906 had asked for purple alyssum seeds but I bought them too late for the seed swap, so I'll be offering the wintersown seedlings at the spring swap instead. If you've already asked me for a plant, please click on the "wanted" icon when swapping opens up! I tip my hat to you.

I'm looking for a bunch of silver lamium for ground cover, like this:
Spotted Dead Nettle (Lamium maculatum 'Beacon Silver')

I just sowed "aphrodite mix" alyssum seed... if I get good germination, I'm hoping to add a couple 6-packs to my swap list. Hopefully I can trade you some mix for some purple, if you want. I lost my "crop" of them last year so am not listing them just yet!

You're right about not being able to reserve plants for people... but if those who have asked will sign up for the swap (on the "Seed Swaps tool"), they can add parsley to their wish list and be ready to click when trading opens. Smiling

thanks-
I think I have updated my list, by checking three items, and adding comments to two of them.
Plant it and they will come.

Thanks, Jill! I think I'll stick to purple alyssum this year and hope that they self-sow. Big Grin

I got fantastic germination!

Cool! I sow alyssum thickly in rows in a little take-out container, then clump-transplant. Might direct-sow some, too, especially with this weather!

There may be a way to <Reserve plants by using the Quantity/packet column to do so. See my sample list

Good idea, but I'd like to suggest a revision... Let's keep the "quantity per packet" field for describing the type/size (seedling, cutting, bare root division, etc). Instead, you can keep track of reserved plants under the "comments" field... but remember to revise your totals before trading opens. :-)

I think, however, it's actually more fair to have people keep track of their own wishes and call dibs on them as trading begins... Spreading out the opportunity to ask for "prime" plants is one of the benefits of using the Swaps tool. I don't think it's been a particular problem with our group, but let's use it as designed. You can still keep track of interest in the "comments" field for your own use, so you know if you should go ahead and split up that second clump of daylilies or whatnot. But in fairness people shouldn't consider a plant to be "theirs" until they call dibs on it.

I do appreciate everybody's patience as we figure out the best way to adapt the Swaps Tool. :-)

Yehudith, thank you very much for putting me down for a "charming array of plants." That made me grin! I'll have to put that on my wish list...

My daughter, Aina, has 3 huge clumps of Montauk Daisies . She has had them for several years.
They DO grow into small shrubs--very lg. clumps. She wants to dig up 2 of these clumps
and give them away. Mind you--these may weigh 30-40lbs each. Lots of soil attached...
Someone could claim one of these root-clumps and share it by cutting it apart too.

She is keeping one of the3 clumps, but cutting it way down to the nubs.
I will take some of the new-growth cuttings from this clump and root them for the swap--and other people.
They are like rooting Autumn Sedum. Easy-Peazy---Never fails.

Is there anyone interested in one of these BIG root-clumps of the Montauk daisy???? LMK.
I have to be careful--as i always ride up with SallyG and her DH. So does Robin (Catbird) and maybe coleup.
Space may be limited. I am sure I will have a lot of small plants to bring as well--even if I always dream
of just arriving with nothing to trade and just enjoying the Party. NEVER happens!!!
Not sure about coleup--even though she just posted on DG re her dysfunctional Freezer.

I am not going to be posting on the fancy schmancy ATP swap thread. This Chat thread will be it for me.
Make sure you look in here now and then to see what I may have to offer. Post your "Wants" here as well.

LMK on the 2 root balls of the Montauk Daisy. Otherwise--Aina will be putting it out on the curb. ...

I have had Montauk daisies- they root easily from cuttings and grow fat. I really don't think it's worth saving the huge root mass. ( we are always crammed to the 'gills' going to plant swap)
Plant it and they will come.

Agreed... I'll try to get some cuttings going from mine also. This is the right time! I never manage to cut back most perennials in winter, and right now the daisies are just starting to put out green leaf buds... cutting them back will let them get bushier, and the cut pieces will root easily in little pots or 6-packs.

Yes! they will---Yes! They will.....
I will go to Aina's Thursday and cut up a bunch. Then--pot them up.

Last year--Aina also let me dig up a pile of her Evening primroses as I had a lot of requests.
Is there anyone who missed out on getting some of these last year?
I have some rooted from last Summer. There ar NO growths or blooms on these at this time.
One just have to have blind faith that there will be.

Samirah, my Pakistani neighbor, likes to root things. Anything I have! I let her come and chop
off anything she wants. She also supplies me with newly greening out atr the roots Lobelia cardinalis.

As always--everything she sticks in the soil--roots. Her secret is--you MUST water cuttings 4 times a day.

I have also collected seeds from all my different Phlox. Yes! They have big seeds!!
Don't know the time-frame for Phlox to grow out from seed....Anyone done this? LMK.

Also, among all of her things she rooted I have one small clump of the Carpet Rose--rooted.

OK--I will keep checking here--or you can Tree-mail me. I promise to check and reply almost every day.

It is still eartly. More leaves and buds will come! Gita

I won't be able to make the swap but if Gardener will be my Garden Fairy I can send in some babies. I have a lot of Valerian (I can't get enough of it, it's so pretty and I love the sent) there's Pytostigia and possibly some veggie seedlings and Tartarian Daisy starts. I wish I had some Camellias to send but they haven't quite rooted yet although I might have a Night Blooming Cerius I've been rooting over the winter.

Yehudith--
Something id picking apart my Camellia bloom buds!!! Birds?

I keep finding shredded bits of the fat bloom buds on my steps. This has happened before.
Not sure who is to blame? Too tall for squirrels. BUT??? They can climb. BUT-- I think it is birds...
They are quite present in the shrubs in front of my house. Maybe they are nesting in my Boxwood--
Hemlocks--or Yews. All close to the house. Or--just using the shrubs for shelter.

My camellia bush is tall. wide and old. It usually blooms in March. The buds are already showing color.
The soon-to-open buds are the size of a big, round grape. I hate to lose them......

Anyone interested in a big root clump of Montauk Daisies? ASAP--DD is putting it on Free Cycle.
Aina (my DD) is going to dig up 2 of these massive clumps. The 3rd one--she is keeping, but gave me
a bunch of 6"-7" tip cuttings to root. These will root anywhere....

BTW--Montauk daisies look like regular Shasta daisies--but they bloom in October. Very sturdy and hardy.
They make big clumps in no time....Like these....Thy are ineluctable..

I have had Montauk daisies but not great luck with them. The little brown june beetles eat the heck out of the leaves, then I have bare stems with a few flowers. Gita, aren't you secretly hoping that you do NOT have to haul a 40 pound clump of soil to Swap? You'e got all those cuttings and they do root easily.
I took my last Montauk out for the garage and am not sad...
Plant it and they will come.
