I'm down to 40 roses now. But maybe I should get rid of Intrigue.

Roses
Out of all my Austins, there were only three that I liked their smell. Evelyn (which reverted back to rootstock and was a very poor bloomer in the heat we get here), Brother Cadfael (scent to die for but would prefer to be in a cooler spot than my garden) and Mary Magdalene (GREAT bloomer, can really take the heat and has a very nice scent). She is a little power house of a rose that I am appreciating more and more, each year that I have her.

My Portland From Glendora also has a very nice scent that I like. Unfortunately she is not in bloom at the moment and the same goes with Yolande--nice scent but not in bloom currently as they are being eaten by rose slugs (unfortunately, but eventually I will get those little suckers!). Both of mine are babies but the scent on them is strong and just lovely. Both are good roses and I would highly recommend them.

Yes, so far my Yolande d'Aragon is a bloom machine. The fragrance is nice...but I think it will get better as mine is just a baby too....and we've mainly had a cold summer so far.

Wow, Lynnez, it looks fabulous. I will have to check both it and JO out (beautiful bouquet!). I never noticed JO in the Sac Hist. Cem Garden. My Abraham Darby is taking a rest. It's usually fragrant.

I'm down to 35 roses, on top of the 15 roses that I've already ordered. Now I will sort them by giving the thornless ones priority. I found out some areas I could plant more roses. I'm going to replace some overgrown pigmy palms with roses. These palms are my favorite palms, nothing chew on them, but they are spiky and can acupuncture me or my husband by accident, especially when we get older.

I don't know how to check if I already commented here and I don't want to search through all the pages, so sorry if I did! Confused Since I grow mainly fragrant roses as a priority, this is a difficult choice. I think my favourites (at the moment) are Cl.Crimson Glory, Nahema, LaFrance, Sugar Moon (similar to Bolero), Eglantyne, Clotilde Soupert, Scepter'd Isle and Munstead Wood. I also really like Star of the Republic and Molineux. In regional gardens, I've also appreciated Memorial Day and the Eglantine roses.

SoCal, I would love to have your list of thornless roses. But maybe that should be on a thornless rose thread! Are they thornless and fragrant?

I sort them out by fragrant first, then thornless. For example, I got Zephirine Drouhin for sale from J&P, it's both thornless and fragrant, and also a climber.
For hybrid tea, Secret is both fragrant and thornless.
For DA, Heritage is both thornless and fragrant. Just a few examples.

You can search for these in our database. Using the "Search by characteristics" feature and checking the thornless box and the box for strong fragrance, I received these results:

Here are the results for thornless with moderate fragrance:

Thank You! Zuzu. That's quite a list. I wonder how many have 0 thorns. Probably a very small handful.

I will have to try Secret again. I bought it bareroot and planted it, but it lost all it's canes to one thing after another.

I found Windermere this morning, Lynnez. Those are some bushes at the Stanford Mansion! It would be nice if they could all be labeled. Windermere was fragrant...a bit different from most others. I couldn't find Jude the Obscure, although I found the perennial graden and looked for it. Maybe next time.

I also dropped by another garden I hadn't been to yet...the Natomas Rose Garden, that has 550 roses, a lot in bloom in full sun. Not too many were fragrant (and none labeled). A red one that smelled like Mr. Lincoln, but could have been Chrysler Imperial stood out.

In the garden I volunteer, this week Double Delight was as fragrant as ever. It must be getting enough water in this heat!

I can't believe you went out today, super hot. Glad you found the Windermere. It is a shame they don't have gardener there. I applied for volunteer but .....

Yeah, it is hard to find the JO as there is no lable. I went few times and finally found it. It is in the middle of garden. I didn't find the Graham Thomas, not sure it is still there.

Lynnez, I probably walked by it because I was looking for more apricot-colored blooms.

There were a dozen or more volunteers (or maybe park & rec. workers, or ??) working hard in the perennial garden this morning pulling weeds, raking, etc., working hard filling up a large trailer with garden debris.

The garden lady in charge was there, too, and she didn't know where JO was at, but offered to look it up in her office later.

Every place I've seen with roses growing looks like they could use more volunteers!

It was a pleasant surprise to walk by Tropicana and be greeted by lovely fragrance of a bud opening. Unfortunately, in this 100 degree weather, the bloom is now totally fried, even though it's been well-watered!

Lynnez - that's an amazing rose to deal so blithely with temps over 100! Sooo pretty!

Seth - Really? I've never smelled Chrysler Imperial. I'll keep an eye out for that rose to buy. Lovey dubby

SoCal - only 35! Well...you'll soon be up to 50! My mom asked me how many roses I have...I said 52...she told me that I'm crazy and sick to have that many roses. She was quite upset. Oh well...you can't please everyone. Whistling Hilarious!

Vaporvac - I'd love to smell La France. Lovey dubby I hope my Sugar Moon (puny bush that hasn't bloomed yet this year...no fragrance last year...few blooms) has fragrance this year.

Zuzu - I have a few of those (thanks for the list)...Charles Darwin and Annie Davidson...I'll have to check for thorns...CD was new last year and AD is new this year.

So I was sniffing roses this morning, and these had the best fragrances:

- Jubilee Celebration - such an intensely sweet/sharp scent!!
- Stainless Steel - very strong perfumey
- Pope John Paul II - very strong perfumey
- Jadis - very strong damask
- Chartreuse de Parme - strong
- Parade Day - Strong damask (I think it's damask)
- Barbra Streisand - strong
- Life of the Party - strong - sharp/sweet
- Memorial Day - strong damask
- Bishop's Castle - strong damask
- Dee-Lish - strong
Of these, my favorites for bush to flower ratio are Barbra Streisand (so healthy and large with lots of flowers (20 buds and a few flowers) ...new this year), Pope John Paul (such a balanced bush with really large flowers), Chartreuse de Parme, Jadis, Dee-Lish.
The others I have are moderate fragrances right now.

I think I'm gong to order Barbra Streisand. I hope there's a tree version.

Rosemary - hmmm....I think I would choose Barbra Streisand. She smells amazing!!!! Such a sharp, intense fragrance...and there are sooo many blooms/buds! Actually, I think tied for first place would be White Licorice. It's blooming again...and I love its fragrance! And it loves to bloom!!

Today my strongest, favorite smells are:
- Barbra Streisand,
- Parade Day,
- Stainless Steel
- Jubilee Celebration
- Memorial Day
- White Licorice
- Tahitian Sunset
- Jadis
