Thanks for all the suggestions, it has afternoon sun. See picture at 1:15pm here. I already have 3 iceberg roses, I gave 2 away, I try not to get any more.

reh0622 said:SoCal, I've never heard of honeysuckle trees!

I seem to remember I read somewhere that lavender roses, extremely robust roses (like Mr. Lincoln), and Austins are all shade tolerant in zone 9. I have a paper somewhere with a list. When I find it, I will start a shade-tolerant rose thread. Smiling

It's trained to be a tree, at least that's when we bought it. Here is a picture of the honeysuckle, it's shading the cute lizard, he is like a pet here, comes very close to us.

@SoCalGardenNut Having afternoon direct sun really changes matters for you. I apologize but I misunderstood your conditions. Then your listing should work fine. Thick petalled roses possibly would do better there (i.e Double Delight, a fav and very fragrant here) although they'll possibly will bloom less than in a full sun condition. I also take into account the reflected light from your walls which should account for at least another hour of direct exposure. Perhaps you are then not so far away from the ideal 6 hours or more.

Honeysuckles trees. SoCal--I guess I have some of those myself...on fences, up other trees, under trees. Where I live, they can get out of hand!

I found the list. It has 75 that do well with less than 6 hrs. It's good you have some sun. In general, light colored roses do well, as well as most ground-cover roses, single roses with 6-12 petals, most hybrid musk roses, and certain miniature roses, vigorous HT's, and some hybrid china and Austins. The colors range from white to apricot and apricot blend, Orange blen and orange pink, mauve, pink and pink blend, yellow and yellow blend, pink and pink blends. Looks like there are a lot of choices!

Oh no J&P got me again. They target me for fragrant roses, plus I still have free shipping code. So I ordered 8 from them. Fragrant roses on sale this weekend. Where I'm going to put them is another story.

GardenNut - I'll be interested to see how your Pinkerbelle does. Mine has a lot of flowers...but they're smallish and the bush is a powdery mildew mess (like many of my roses this year). I'm not happy with it. But...maybe next year. Julia Child...I love that rose...and want to get it again. I want to see how your Pure Perfume does...that one has always been on my radar. Lovely choices!

I was hesitant about Pinkerbelle after reading your experience about it. My area has less problem with mildew, so I keep my fingers crossed. I will order another Julia Child with Regan nursery, I like the tree version. Same with Just Joey.
But my philosophy is I can get rid of anything I don't like or didn't research enough. Like one of my landscape roses. I might put QuickSilver as a replacement.

GardenNut - yes, mine isn't very good...but then very few of my roses are doing well. Hopefully next year, you can post some wonderful pictures of Pinkerbelle et al.

Best rose scent for me, truly intoxicating, was the Blue Moon hybrid tea I had in Texas City. Huge blooms that were so intense in smell, one on my desk (I was a classroom teacher) would make the whole front of the room smell good. When I sniffed it, I just wanted to bury my nose deeper and deeper into the bloom. LOL

Man of Steel is high on my list. Its also interesting in that its a "lavender" (if indoors though it darkens slightly into a pale blue) that doesnt have the common lemon scent of the colour class. Im not sure how to describe it other than marshmellow.

Protoavis - Marshamallow!!! Oh my!!! How unusual...love it!! I just looked it up...really, really pretty!!!

Peggy - that sounds amazing!! What did you think of Blue Moon's repeat, health, amount of bloom, etc.?

Wow, so many fragrances here...
I'm like so many of you that I first look to see it's fragrance notoriety before moving onto BS and other disease resistance. Nothing more upsetting than sticking your nose into a flower only to smell LETTUCE 😁

Here's a shortlist that comes to mind that are the utter powerhouse of fragrances. There's plenty more, and though a tough selection, I will reserve for just the top 5 (tied for the strongest and highest quality fragrance):

-Melody Parfumee
-Bolero
-Full Sail
-Lady of Shalott
-Blue Girl

MP will make your eyes bulge when you lean in... often times no need to lean! It is like a huge bowl of fresh sliced lemons and grapefruits with antique rose blended in, yet much less pronounced than the citrus.

Bolero smells to me like an expensive European rich woman's perfume. 😂 No rose fragrance at all.

Full Sail is a deep, rich, velvety warm vanilla and allspice with vetiver and lavender mixed in the base notes.

Lady of Shalott is probably the most unique fragranced I've got. It smells to me a lot like Earl Grey Tea, mixed with heavy notes of creamsicle (vanilla orange ice cream) and a hint of raspberry.

I dare stuck BG in there because personally, the fragrance is haunting. Transcends Time.. Like old fashioned French lilacs. You'll want to go back for more.

I wish to mention that Blue Girl should be grown own root, as I've seen a hugely improved plant in number of flushes, fragrance, petal count, and most of all.. disease resistance. BG is almost BS free in my rainy humid environment. I am 100% spray free, and it's doing wonderfully.

I've got a ton more notable, but these would be my "Stuck on a Desert Island Selection"

I would sure love to be on a dessert island with a hot cup of Earl Grey, a creamsicle and raspberries. Those are all some of my very favorite smells and tastes in the world ! I was just thinking today I should have ordered Young Lycidas instead of Lady of Shalott. Now it looks like she was a good choice for my little garden. Hopefully her scent will overpower St Swithun I made stand in the corner for bad perfume.
Lokelani, I wish you had the job of writing the fragrance descriptions for David Austin, those are terms I can relate to.

Marshmellow sounds really great too Protoavis, the first whiff of fresh Jet Puffed when you rip open a fresh soft bag smells so good.

Lokelani - I love your descriptions!! And I love what you said about sticking your nose into a rose and only smelling lettuce. So true!!!! It's instinctive to try to smell roses. Everyone does it.

I only wish my nose can tell the difference between these fragrances. But now that's I've read lokelani's post I will pay more attention.
