How do you feel about yours?
What color is it actually?
I have one ready to plant but am having second thoughts.
If it's not DARK purple as pictured in the catalog, I'll donate it to someone else....

First, it's not a 'tree' ha, ha; that's a misnomer--something I think the marketing people dreamt up as a gimmick. I was dissapointed in it when I first got it. The flowers are not as dark as those marketing pictures show by any means. I'd say it's more of a deep, dark, dark pink rather than dark purple as I expected. Otherwise mine are nice strong growing and hardy lilies. Mine are about 48 to 60 inches tall affter being in the ground here four--going on five years now. I've grown to kinda like it over time. Overall, nice plant characturistics.

That 'tree' thing is just a marketing ploy for some of the ahem, not so good lily and bulb vendors.

My Purple Prince is a dark pink also. But it's pretty. If you have an area where a dark pink would go, I'd plant it.

I have a few of them and I can assure you that they have changed the colour. I happen to really like them as they are extremely fragrant (in my garden anyway) and they are just off the deck giving a still summers evening a fantastic fragrance. Mine have grown to about 6 feet after 3 years and have a good number of blooms on them. I've added some pictures that are pretty close to the actual flower colour.

A couple more pics. I think some difference in color is always to be expected because of different soils, weather and 'just plain different parts of the country' Mine offset readily and has heavy, waxy petal texture (substance). This plant is part of a group next to some Menorcas.

Yeah, I was afraid of that marketing thing.
That's why I was getting cold feet.

I detest pink.
It is not allowed on my property.....

So I will plant my bulb elsewhere, in a garden at the home of a charity I sometimes assist with.

THANK YOU for edumicating me.

Thanks everyone for clearing up the "tree thing"
I have had lilies that grew 7 feet tall with 2 inch dia, stems, that was the second year. Now they are regular lily size so I am happy just to see them.
About Purple Prince. The Brecks pix is photoshopped and contrast has been made darker to make the blooms look deeper If you plant your PP ,I would suggest giving it part shade. I had mine in part shade the first year ,then a tree came down and now its in full sun.

Shown here with Purple cone flower.

Thank you very much.
I planted them (bag of 3) at a garden where I sometimes volunteer.
They'll get morning sun and afternoon shade.

I think I'll stop buying from Breck's.
That's a dirty trick, altering the color.

There are a couple of websites I dont buy from
Brecks is one and VanBourgundian is the other.
Its worth a few dollars more to get decent sized bulbs. If you want PP for yourself try The Lily Garden or B&D lilies.

No, I detest pink.

Michigan Bulb is on a lot of people's hate lists but I buy from them sometimes. Don't always love what I get but the prices are so low it's ok.

Pink can be overdone.I agree.
I like the deep pinks but I have yet to see a really dark purple.
Just my guess but I had heard about Michigan Bulb also.

All bulbs come from the Netherlands and the price must be according to grade of bulb, so the smaller bulbs are cheap for website companies to buy and resell.
Personally I dont have 4 years to wait for small less expensive a lily to mature.
Guess it comes down to personal preference.

Good luck on that one! This past year has been the year from hell for me and wrong plants. 4 out of 6 daylilies, 8 lilies and a clematis were all wrong. The worst part wasn't that they were wrong as most were nice plants just not what I wanted, but the attitude of the company I bought most of them from. Their view was " you got plants so what's your problem".

Its too bad we dont have a GardenWatchdog on ATP.
I always check a company before I order.
I found it's better to forgo a plant from somewhere that has awful service and poor customer relations.
There is always another plant out there.

Would you care to turn them in here?

I already have, It's Vesey's out of PEI. It used to be a good place for bulbs / plants, now I wouldn't even recommend them to someone I didn't like.

Thanks Brian. Its sad when a company with a great reputation gets bought by an outfit that runs it into the ground.
I never was a Veseys customer so I will avoid that one.
