I think the fact that I paid top dollar is part of what is making me a little crabby . I have paid more for a plant . But most times I have paid a hell of a lot less . I think it's more of a jade than white , which isn't a bad thing. I don't have many plants that shade ๐Ÿ‘

This message is apparently stuck in a loop somehow. Maybe replying will end the loop. I really preferred the greener version of this better than the white version. I'm not set up to provide enough light for the Echeverias during the winter, so I'm seldom satisfied with them. When they look good, they look very, very good. When they don't I'm not too fond of them.

I topped a few Echies around a week ago. Look like they nicely calloused, so I might pot those up today. I'll grab some pictures after. Smiling

Started with a Lola, Black Prince, and Purple Pearl. Have a few more I want to top as well. Should really clean up that shelf eliminating the tall stems.

Looking good!

Contrast here between a plant about to flower terminally (rosette will turn into an inflorescence) and what it looks like a year afterward, once the inflorescence has been cut back and the branches have grown out.

Baja, I love the colors in that first photo. Is that normal coloration for them, or a color change when they're close to blooming?

E. setosa var. deminuta is getting close to blooming. Flowers should be opening any time now. Hurray!

This guy's growing indoors under lights, with a bunch of other small Echeverias. I'd like to get something stronger for them, but in the meantime, it seems to be sufficient to keep them content. Just have to keep the bulbs reaaaaaally close to them. The table looks like a pile of lightbulbs. Hilarious!

Well, the plant looks really great to me. You seem to have the light dialed in. I can't get enough of those little hairy Echeverias, especially the setosas, they are so striking in close up. So many variations on the theme and yet a lot of them have real character.

I am kind of cheating here with an Echeveria-adjacent plant, but it's the parent of lots of hybrids with Echeverias. Here is Graptopetalum amethystinum in its final pot (10"), this afternoon's repotting project, and I only had to break off one large branch in the process. Smiling

Thumb of 2021-05-02/Baja_Costero/8e42f1

The plant should continue to grow sideways and downward with time.

And here is Echeveria subrigida, a plant I restart every year from bracts (leaves off the inflorescence), passing on the mature plant when she flowers a year later (after harvesting the necessary bracts, of course). I repotted this plant last week and that 3 gallon can will work fine until she flowers this summer

at which time the recipient is encouraged to find a bigger container, but tends to be content to stunt the plant, leaving it in this pot for life.

Finally here is E. agavoides "Red Edge" now in its final pot (10"'/3gal), and just starting to offset.

New plants in the mail today ... a bumper crop, dehydrated but basically in good shape.

The recently described E. zorzaniana, plus two larger setosas

Thumb of 2021-05-03/Baja_Costero/a5376d

E. setosa deminuta, E. pulvinata frigida (aka "Frosty" and yes, it's pretty much white), lutea and purpusorum

Thumb of 2021-05-03/Baja_Costero/f5753e

And a smaller setosa of the type variety, because... well, I can't get enough. Smiling

In case you hadn't heard of E. zorzaniana (which I hadn't until recently) here is the paper from 2009.

https://www.crassulaceae.ch/up...

For the non-bilingual, this species is similar to E. carminea from nearby in the mountains of Oaxaca, both with leaves slightly pubescent but not outright furry, with a very long stem (for an Echeveria), but the standout feature distinguishing the new species from carminea (at least in my mind, as a simple take home conclusion) is the extra-long pedicels. You know, that little stemlet at the base of the flower? Apparently they grow about twice as long as the type subspecies of carminea. So I am looking forward to getting out my ruler when my plant eventually flowers. Smiling

I think you're in for a good show. Smiling

I was thinking to myself, that plant sure does look like it has some shaviana in it, based on those crinkly margins, and so I looked it up. According to the patent it indeed is 75% shaviana (a backcrossed F1 hybrid). For random interest and comparison, here are the parental species

and here is another hybrid involving those same 2 species:

this one an F1 hybrid (a distinct clone of cante x shaviana from the one used in breeding "Neon Breakers"), and much more of an intermediate phenotype.

Sorry to nerd out on the micro details of parentage, but I do find the family connections between different plants fascinating. Smiling

Looking back over this discussion, I may have caused some confusion by not saying that my last pic is a different plant from the labeled 'Neon Breakers' that I purchased recently. The about-to-bloom one snuck into this discussion from "smallest plants", pictured @ Apr 24, 2021 2:10 PM CDT. It was purchased as a NOID a few years ago. I don't know if it's stunted or naturally smaller. Hard to get a sense of scale from every pic. Sorry if I was not as clear as I could have been, but am glad the pic inspired the info about the lineage of 'NB.' Thanks again!

Thanks for clarifying. That plant may actually be shaviana itself. Maybe the flowers will help with an ID.
