Been out of power for almost five days in the heat. Grumbling Just got power today...and what a treat to see the beautiful raised garden beds. Thanks for sharing.

I'm tempted to do some raised bed but the area I have is full sun (9am to 6pm). Most of my young semps are doing fine in another full sun area (9am to 3pm), few are not so fine (being covered), but about half of its offsets are struggling. I'd like to know where are your raised beds located. I'm guessing that my semps should do okay in my new full sun area once they're matured.

Hello to you all. Have been lurking and as usual, wanting all that I see.

Kim, I am so sorry, I missed reading your last post.
I am so glad your power is back, but sorry you had to go through all that involves being out of power that long. Group hug
Our son was only out of power for 3 days, he was so relieved when it finally came back on.

Yikes, Kim... I know we got off easy; our power was out for 12 hours, but that's the longest outage we've ever had in our new-ish development (underground lines).

I've got a bunch of new semps settling into little planters on the deck landing... some are being really slow about rooting in, but apart from some browning when I let the lower leaves get too damp (have since mulched all of them with a generous quarter inch of sand) they're doing really well there... and it's about as full sun as full sun gets in our area, sunrise to sunset. Some get a little filtered shade from the lilac in front of the deck stairs, and come to think of it they are doing maybe a little better yet, so I should probably rotate everybody periodically.
We're all learners, doers, teachers.

Be sure its course sand. I experimented a while back with fine sand, which is readily available here as play sand. Over time the fine sand took on a consistency of concrete as the fine particles packed closely together. The plants did not like it. I also tried using a top coat of porous silica (sand). I had a lot of problems with rot from that and now only use it inside the mixes.

Yeah, I would not want to go through that again as I was experiencing heat exhaustion by the fourth day. My July 4th went well since we got power that morning. Thanks everyone for Group hug .

I went through the posts and got the idea of using curtain to shield raised bed semps., thanks to Lynn.

We've now had 3 days of heavy rain and storming (not constantly, thankfully) and everything is very wet. I see few bees, but the weeds are very, very busy. Thumbs down (jumping up overnight!)

We might get rain today and maybe a thunderstorm. The rain will be good for the newly planted semps and tiny seedlings.

I know what you mean about the weeds jumping up overnight. Sad

Thank you Carol. Thankfully there are plenty of offsets from the blooming plants to replace the dying rosettes.
A bloom stalk is not something we want to see if we only have one or two rosettes of that variety. In this case there are more than enough youngsters to carry on. Thumbs up

All the raised beds are so pretty, even the blooms.
I don't know what thread I posted about loosing so many that Lynn sent me Summer 2011. Still makes me sad to see my Semp. Graveyard.
Wed. I received a box (for postage) from Janice. Bless her heart, she'll never know how much the packed box means to me. In order for me to have a "Janice Garden" I had to go to my throwaway garden. ( lol yes, I throw them away, in places that I can go back and get them)
This garden exists because last Summer when I did the Strawberry Jars over I had a pot full of tiny babies left over. I threw them under the Holly Tree and told them to grow. And grow they did. Thumb of 2012-07-20/dahtzu/872b0e. When I finished getting them up, I had a larger pot full of some nice noid Semps.
Thumb of 2012-07-20/dahtzu/8293b5. After this removal, I mixed Garden Soil and lot's of pea gravel to the cleaned out area and started putting my new jewels to bed. Hen & Chicks from: Janice

Wow, 21 different (and all have more than 1) named Semps.
I am so happy, had to fight the tears, Ray was looking.
LOL I cry when I lose them and I cry from happiness when I get them.
Just a Semp. crying mama.
Thumb of 2012-07-20/dahtzu/9b0f36 The Semps. were in individual labeled bags. As I planted, I left 1 small plant in each bag, and this is what I did with those.
Thumb of 2012-07-20/dahtzu/456a0b Thumb of 2012-07-20/dahtzu/c9215b.
Now, I still have to do something with all those throwaways.. This is what I did.
Thumb of 2012-07-20/dahtzu/2dc3d0 All this I did yesterday and still had some teeny tiny babies left and this morning I decided to throw them here.
Thumb of 2012-07-20/dahtzu/79760e Now it raining so hard, harder than it's rained all year. I may have to start all over tomorrow.
A great "BIG" thank you Janice. I love and treasure every one. They each already have a separate folder for their future pictures.
