My husband and I built the stone wall when we built the house (early 80s). All the rock came from a local river bed, which was a long and arduous task. I think we figured we picked up each rock at least 4-5 times. We were young and poor then, had much more time than money.
Yes, those are forget-me-nots. Later come calendulas, allysum, and what I thought were California poppies, but I think are some sort of field poppy - much taller than I had anticipated. This is my annual bed and changes up some each year. Had some borage show up last season, which was nice with the calendulas.
Tell me about your luck with alliums. I have ordered a couple novelties over the years and they either are very short lived, or they revert to some sort of plain onion which self-seeds everywhere. I know I've purchased some of the big purple drumsticks, but those ended up looking just like an onion, small balls of dirty white flowers. I also bought some sort of wild-haired looking allium and I think that one just didn't thrive. I'm always taken with them in photos but have never been able to get that look myself. ??
I just bought 3 haks this fall on clearance, hope they do well. I lost the tag, so don't know the cultivar. The Plant Farm (local nursery) had all grasses on sale for $3 per gallon. I went a bit nuts on that one...still trying to figure out where to put some tall maiden grass.
