Della, I really like this last one you posted. Nice everything! I'm partial to the color anyway. I think the flower form bears a great resemblance to Seafarer right down to the mid rib and little green tips on the reverse. Seafarer (Judith Freeman) continues to be one of my all time favorites. By the way, what kind of fruit trees are those in the backgound? Looks like they're enjoying a good life--just curious.

Lorn, those are nectarines. They're having a great year - no leaf curl this season!

Just searched images, and Seafarer's a beautiful looking lily. I'd love to know the Judith's secret to getting asiapet crosses. Wouldn't it be fantastic to raise babies like that? The seedling of mine recurves more as the flowers fully open, into the classical L. davidii form. That photo was taken early in the morning - but I do think it has the best inflorescence of its siblings, and I've made lots of crosses with it.

Temperatures around Hobart's suburbs vary hugely, due to both built and natural topography; sea and mountain breezes etc... Even in individual gardens there's such a range of microclimatic effects, that I'd have to put out multiple thermometers to monitor just what's happening here. Having driven home straight from Anthony's one warm afternoon, my own body sensors tell me that it's around 3-4 celsius cooler here, (with cold air drainage from the mountain and surrounding leafy trees and stream) perhaps more, but then I have cool shade spots and baking concrete spots - the L. candidum spent most of its time at the fringes of shade and sun. Morning light but protected from midday and afternoon. There are afternoons that could dry out a seedling pot if I'm not home, even if they've had a morning water.

Ahh--that dreded leaf curl. I have to treat my peach trees every Fall and Spring with Bayer and sometimes they still get it. Everything you have looks SO nice and healthy!!

I am trying to think of what Bayer makes that is a fungicide....

What is it?

Hold the Bayer (advanced desaese control). I had that and Ortho Daconil mixed up. I use Bayer Desease Control as a systemic preventive for black spot, powdery mildew, rust, etc. It's Daconil that I use specifically for leaf curl. Right now I've got Ortho but I've used others--as long as they contain Daconil. Thanks for noting that, Rick.

You might want to think about switching it up, now and then, if you use a Daconil product all the time. Wouldn't want to build any resistant disease strains, you know.

I am not familiar with tebuconazole, the active ingredient in Bayer advanced disease control. Chemicals change so quickly, it's very hard to keep up. And so often the chemical is virtually the same as before, but only slightly different to meet EPA standards, so they are required to change the name.

All sounds like high tech chemical warfare aimed at boosting Bayer patents and profits! I'm almost prehistoric with Bordeaux mix, if I remember to use anything at all. Hilarious!

Some more pics; these are half-siblings to the previous ones, sharing their NOID orange turkscap pod parent, but having Montreaux (pink 1a) for a dad - some showed varying degrees of pinkish tones. In my mind 'pinkgloss':

I find it interesting how the 'tiger' (L. Lancifolium) heritage shows through in the reddish seedlings particularly... (at least it does to me), and I wonder which parent it came through - perhaps both?

The last seedling is a shadow of its last season's self:

If indeed there are lancifolium characteristics, judging from what little foliage I can see, my guess is that it comes from L. davidii. In addition, a diploid form of L. landifolium, that would most likely be needed for breeding back then, would have been hard to come by.

Indeed I hope to survive the drive! So glad the sun is well clouded. It only occured to me last night that I should have asked if you have anything I could bench for you - but then we only have a normal sedan to travel in - not quite like having room for 40 stems! (Much envious of that great truck, Anthony Green Grin! )

Thanks Moby - I'm gradually getting a system together for posting photos. There's many more to share.

Rick, I hadn't considered that (the timing of diploid L. lancifolium), but the feature I was looking at was the very flat oval spotting. They look like very tigerish spots to me. The narrow foliage comes through the turkscap, which propably does have L. davidii ancestry. It seems I remember tiger hybrids from a long way back (could be an illusion of childhood), and though I call Montreaux an 'old' hybrid, its younger than those childhood memories. I forgot to mention, but many of this seedling batch tend to throw stem bulbils it something damages the flower buds.

Hmm.. but anyway! Must finish packing for the journey north! Smiling

(And good luck surviving the winds today, Anthony!))

So I kind of slacked on the pictures! I've lots taken of this year's flowers, but haven't had the frame of mind for sitting down and sorting them to post.

The last flowers of the season are opening now though, and they're my favourite, so I can't resist posting.

These seedlings are from Rainbow Lily seeds of quite a few years ago now, second season they've flowered. From (roughly innacurate :p) memory, they were listed as a L. speciosum rubrum/speciosum album cross, though I don't remember which was the pod parent...

Seedling one:

Lots more to open. I absolutely Lovey dubby speciosums!

Today cooled things down! Yep, as in Francombe. I bought just one lot of seeds years ago - lots of american species - and they all germinated really well, but it was the middle of my moving around homeless period, and they didn't make it through. (Though I still have some L. columbianum babies in suspended animation - how can something survive for five years of neglect and not grow?) Poor things.

Love to see the speciosums you've got :D
