If we have a good autumn for setting and ripening seed, I might have some to share from crosses within this group of seedlings Smiling Then all you would need is 4 years patience!

How has your seed-sowing progressed? I saw in another thread that you found had some wonderful babies to raise.

Hello Della,
I only sowed 4 kinds, the epigeal ones, of which one pot is still in the fridge for some cooling.
Of those other 3, only L. regale is popping up. It's the winner :)
But I am happy I saw some Cardiocrinum germination in two pots I have kept in the fridge over winter.
The two tiny bulbils I bought for big bucks, DIED. My mistake, I think.
Really putting my patience to the test with the other seeds (knowing they are in the freezer and can't sow them till a bit later on).
Oh well, I "do am" a seed aka lilium freak now...so I never say NO to any offer Smiling

Calin,
Did the cardiocrinum seeds sprout in the fridge, or after being taken out of the fridge?

Which species are they?

In the fridge Rick. That's why I took the two containers out. Really just 2 in each, but that's a start.
I would say they are giganteum, but I would have to check what and from where I got two years ago...
I remember it was a Canadian friend who sent me a lot of seeds.
I'll see if I can find details.

You'll feel pretty wonderful for sure when you see your own cardiocrinum in flower, fixpix :)

Taken awhile, but here's some pics from the January Lilium show in Devonport. A flower 'fix' to help through spring. :D

Firstly, this was my favourite of the show, a complex L. rosthornii hybrid... absolutely sublime:

So previous were some species, including L. callosum, some interdivisional/OT and a lone trumpet stem that made it late in the season.

Below, orientals. From memory, most are unnamed seedlings of local breeding:

After "careful" examination, I think my favorite is the white and yellow L. auratum hybrid in the last post. The first L. rosthornii hybrid pics come in a close second, only because it needs further improvement, IMO. L. rosthornii is a valuable and interesting species, as it has genes for both saturated coloring, light coloring and fading coloring. Regarding this particular specimen, I don't think I have ever seen any lily with secondary flowers from the base of the inflorescence right up to the very top!
the L. wardii is fantastical.

Thanks Della for the "fix".
Love that L. rosthornii hybrid (got seeds? LOL), the orientals are gorgeous and the L. wardii is also cool.
Geez... I'll have to dig up my irises, daffodils, bushes, alpines, sedums, ...

Lorn, I'm just about to see what pics I have of single flowers from the show.

I agree about the L. rosthornii, Rick, which I think is why I like it so much. (Apart from it having all those 'little things' I like so much in lilies... whiskered papillae! Drooling ) Seeing it was "wow! Look at all the potential that was hidden in the genes of that unassuming henryi look-alike, and so much more to go!" That seedling has a unique appearance that really promises great things for the future. When I think of the impact L. henryi has had on our modern hybrids, L. rosthornii is all that and so much more! Just superb.

Of course the oriental hybrids are beautiful too. :D

I picked up a packet of seed ((L. rosthornii x L. henryi) x L. henryi var. citrinum) selfed, though not certain it's from the same hybridist Confused There may be a spare seed or three Hilarious!

It was a lovely room full. I really admire the orientals - I used to grow them years ago when an old clone 'lavender lady' was my favourite, but now... I'm not really sure why I don't grow them any longer. Maybe all the moving round and inadequate attention. Asiatics are just so much tougher.

Going back awhile, Anthony posted this beautiful creature Thumb of 2013-03-25/dellac/c78036 and I was smitten.

He was good enough to supply a potted specimen, bulbil progeny of the original that had been found in an old Sandy Bay garden, and I had took it home to examine closely. As the flower and anthers opened I suspected it was a triploid. It certainly didn't look like the other pictures of L. lancifolium var. flaviflorum.

Scouring books I found a photograph of Hornback's Gold. The spitting image of Anthony's lily. Hornback's Gold is an exceptional old triploid variety with L. lancifolium var. flavum in its breeding. It's nearly impossible to find images online, in fact, I found just one other:Thumb of 2013-03-25/dellac/af3a8a

But... I think it's certain in my mind that they're one and the same. We have Hornback's Gold alive and thriving here in Hobart! Hurray!

(And I'm posting this here because I experimented with crosses, and have some seed pictures to show - when I get back to computer!)

I experimented with a few crosses as well..Many people have looked at this lily 'and' said ''Its different''.. I have given away bulbils to breeders here, and given small potted bulbs as prizes at local flower shows.. I now know It is alive and thriving in at least 4 gardens....'Good scouring ,Della' Thumbs up
