What a treat to wake up on a cold December morning and find these gorgeous pictures. Now I know where some of my favorite irises come from. Thanks Brad for sharing these great shots.

Leon you are welcome I wish I would of took more pictures of the landscaping but I got lost in the Iris Field I had it all to myself for a few hours Smiling

Aryln it has been horrible outside the past couple days, we needed moisture but not to this extreme the snow we got was wet and heavy, there are Trees down all over the city and thousands with out power at this time of the year it is a real mess. But every day is a step closer to spring Hurray!

Mary Ann they are Japanese Maples but I did not get a picture of the name of that one, they are fantastic I just wish I could get them to live here there colors are my favorite. I am now working on Variegated Dogwoods those were the trees with the different color leaves in the pictures I am hoping they are a little more hardy.

Jo Ann they had a really nice sized Seriyu planted, that is another one that I Love I have bought 2 good sized ones and they look great for me through the growing season and fall but they don't wake up in the spring Thumbs down another reason Oregon is so impressive every time I go I find new plants that I want to try at home you can see fields of Conifers and Jap Maples growing everywhere which Enables me to continue to plant and try them thinking I am going to get lucky but very few like my back yard
Here is a pic of there tree

I look forward to there catalog coming every year it has great pictures in it and always good reading material especially for the newer intro's and they usually have a section in the back that goes over some of there Seedlings that show promise and awards there Iris won, It is a real treat and something that helps with the winter blues. The weekend I was there they were having a Garden show in the area for the different Hosta and Peony growers and there were a lot of people in the hosta gardens but the Iris fields were empty in full bloom Shrug! at the time I didn't realize they were having there annual show but I was clicking on some pictures in the Peony thread this summer and Connie had some great pictures of there property and even managed to catch one of me in Iris Heaven walking the fields.I'm sure the look on my face was priceless when I opened that link and found a picture of myself Rolling on the floor laughing Here is the link for her thread

I was hoping to see some of my favorites from the catalog in full bloom and was not disappointed, I think the printer did not do them justice on quite a few. It was really neat to see them up close, I am always looking for new color patterns and something different and they had quite a few that I am adding to my wish list, Here are my favorites from there gardens

I got Dipped in Dots last summer, can't wait for it, I sure do like Patchwork Puzzle and All My Dreams, They for sure have to go onto my wish list. Lynette Blue sure is ruffly! Think that's another one I have to consider. Not fair showing all these beautiful pictures when I'm suffering from Iris withdrawal! Blinking I need an injection of Iris! and I need it NOW! Oh -- no fair Brad -- only the picture of your back............ Thumbs down

But seriously -- PINK Japanese Maples? I never heard of that. I've got a red one myself. Good luck with the Dogwood -- I've never been able to keep one alive, and I live in a pretty gentle climate. They are tricky!! Be sure to plant it in the shade of another tree.

We have a flowering dogwood, but not the varigated foliage kind, and one thing that's a real "must" for any dogwood is slightly acid soil. It's a constant struggle for me, as ours is planted on the old railroad right-of-way, which is crushed limestone! I dug a hole about 5' deep and 6' in dia., filled it with "regular" soil and compost, and treat it heavy with soil sulfer and Mir-acid! It's doing "ok", but not "prospering", if you know what I mean. This year's drought has NOT helped, either!....By the way, Patchwork Puzzle would be my pick!....Arlyn

There are different shades of pink in Japanese maples.

Here is one of my sister's Japanese maples, which turns really hot pink each December. This picture was taken just as it was approaching the pink stage.

And here was my little Geisha, which unfortunately died this last summer. I really loved it and will probably order another one of these days -- but I'll have to find a better spot where it doesn't get afternoon sun in our summer heat. And I noticed that they had a little Geisha at Mid-America Garden back in 2010 too.
Thumb of 2012-12-22/Betja/12868b

And this picture is of Shaina, taken in Vancouver, Washington during our 2010 trip.
Thumb of 2012-12-22/Betja/aaf7d7

And here is Beni schichihenge, taken in the mountains near Vancouver on the same trip -- and Mid America has at least one really big Beni schichihenge too. I love the foliage on this one, but my small one was decapitated when a table full of daylilies collapsed down on it. (Pronounced "Benny Shee-chee-hengay")

Needless to say, I love the pink Japanese maples!

Jo ann those are great pictures of your Seriyu I love the fall colors of it, I was interested in it because they told me at the time it was one of the only Lace leaf Jap Maples that grows upright like a tree, most look like a shrub with that leaf pattern think (Crimson Queen) and I also tried Coralinium no luck Thumbs down but wow what a awesome color in the spring. I saw quite a few of them in Oregon at Whitman Farms she is in the Salem area as well and specializes in rare trees, so I tried it with about 15 others Rolling my eyes. and I got 2 of them to live. I think after Iris, Maples are my favorite if I could just have Vermont in the fall in my back yard it would be perfect. There is a website that has some great pictures of Jap Maples he does a blog every week through the growing season of different Maples and he has the most varieties I have ever seen. Here is the link for some good pics if you click on the link Maples on the Move he has like the past 4 years on there.

Tom I'm glad I can help feed the addiction LOL more to come Big Grin

Mary Ann I was shocked when I found that picture I opened it up expecting to look at a field shot and did a double take Hilarious! I guess you never know when someone will be taking your picture but I couldn't help but think what a small world I was looking for pictures of Peonies and found one of myself in a Iris Field Thumbs up

Arlyn I have 2 so far both are just a couple of years growing here and I planted them in my berms with a french drain because of this rock hard clay I have in the backyard, I seem to have luck with some delicate plants as long as they drain but the Jap maples just won't take the cold here. I have only a few that seem to be growing at all most survive but not much growth. The 2 dogwoods I have one is variegated and the other is supposed to be fruit bearing it was called a Milky Way but it has not produced any. I wish I could find some of the white leafed ones like I saw in Oregon just not a lot of nurseries here that bring them in, I am guessing because they are delicate and they do not want them returned. I have been using Amur Maples there hardy and they have great fall color almost there with the Jap Maples.

Betty Those are great pictures I was hoping to see some of your Jap Maple pics, I remember you said you had some this spring I think the Shaina would have to be in my top 3 favorites the color of it in the spring is 2nd to none it really puts on a show of color and a perfect little garden tree if only you could share some of your winter weather like last year nodding I might be able to grow one.

Info really didn't absorb, until I read this thread twenty times. How very surprising that Pard got a pic of you in the iris gardens. Maybe it really is a small community here. How wonderful, and odd, to have those fields all to yourself.
