This Coleus is almost gone now..though Coleus wasabi is still holding on..but the others especially with reddish hues on their leaves are done for the season.

Just the before and after..summer and fall ..

Here are some of my coleus. They have been mainly scavenged from neighbourhood plants. Here in the subtropics they grow well and are so easy to propagate. I try to keep 3 clumps of each cultivar going at different ages. The colour they add to my daylily garden can be quite breathtaking. I have tried to buy named cultivars from local nurseries but they come in boxes of seedlings labelled 'coleus' only.

Glen, those are awesome! The 3rd one from Nov 7, 2013 8:39 PM CST looks like 'Florida Sun Jade.' There are SOOO many though, just a suggestion to compare.

Looks like next week will be the end of Coleus here, I see a low of 33 predicted. That will definitely ruin the rest of the leaves!

Seen as a grouping like that, they may be 'Wizard mix.'
http://parkseed.com/wizard-mix...

Coleus are officially dead around here, as of today. Any outside I mean.

Glen, it's all up to you southern-hemisphere'ers & those in the tropics to enthrall folks with pretty outdoor Coleus displays for the next few months. At my house are few small Coleus in various pots, but mostly down to cuttings for the season - oh man!

Many of mine are in the sunny kitchen window and loving it. Very soon I'll have to cut them back.

Many thanks for possible ids. Tiffany I will try to do some coleus pics for you. I will have to think harder about how to photograph them. I noticed that what looks good to my eye shows lots of foliage raggedness and leaf holes from grasshoppers in the photos.
This is another one I just bought from another nursery. The leaves are small - it is named: "Summer coleus". Is it familiar to anyone?

Thanks, Allison.

Still a lot more in vases to be planted but I've noticed the cuttings taken in late October just don't root fast. Has anyone else had that experience?

Arlene, I've observed that too, once Coleus plants start getting low-40 temps, they are extremely stressed. I've often waited until 'panic night' to take cuttings but have tried to do a little earlier this year. Last year success rate was way down, taking cuttings around Thanksgiving, a very late first frost, but lots of 40's before that. This year, it was a quite suddenly plunge, but I'd already done cuttings about 3 weeks before, just before Halloween. I don't think it involves time of year, just the temps leading up to when the cuttings were taken. Also, they are in bloom mode this time of year, a more difficult time for most plants to be propagated. I leave them in water until they can be planted back in the yard in the spring.

Glen, leaves with holes are perfectly normal (outside.) Soooo many critters love to munch on Coleus. I gave up trying to 'know' Coleus names, besides the basics like rainbow and wizard, and those that stick in my head when I buy one with its' name on it. There are over 2,000, and most can look wildly different in different exposures. Even the ones I wouldn't buy, I love looking at in other people's pics!

Love your "panic night". I've done it much too often!

Normally I don't root in water but with the later cuttings I wanted some reassurance that they'd grow and I wouldn't be wasting time and soil by potting up those that wouldn't grow.

I totally agree with your entire second paragraph.

Your cuttings are looking great Arlene. I took most of mine this year about mid Sept and let them root in soil outside. There was still enough heat then that most seemed to get well rooted before I brought them inside. Getting a little leggy now and I've been pinching them back already.

I took some cuttings of my 'Gold Anemone' about a month ago. I felt at the time that this plant was wanting a bit more light/sun than it had been getting. Wow! I was right! This guy has surpassed my expectations! The color is popping!!!
After taking some cuttings, and before giving it more light/sun...
