Arlene, I've observed that too, once Coleus plants start getting low-40 temps, they are extremely stressed. I've often waited until 'panic night' to take cuttings but have tried to do a little earlier this year. Last year success rate was way down, taking cuttings around Thanksgiving, a very late first frost, but lots of 40's before that. This year, it was a quite suddenly plunge, but I'd already done cuttings about 3 weeks before, just before Halloween. I don't think it involves time of year, just the temps leading up to when the cuttings were taken. Also, they are in bloom mode this time of year, a more difficult time for most plants to be propagated. I leave them in water until they can be planted back in the yard in the spring.
Glen, leaves with holes are perfectly normal (outside.) Soooo many critters love to munch on Coleus. I gave up trying to 'know' Coleus names, besides the basics like rainbow and wizard, and those that stick in my head when I buy one with its' name on it. There are over 2,000, and most can look wildly different in different exposures. Even the ones I wouldn't buy, I love looking at in other people's pics!
