One of the bonuses from living in Mexico is that help is not super expensive. I pay more than a local would but even so it is well within my budget. I also have a housekeeper that has been working for me for 4 years and she comes 3x a week to do those things, like mopping the endless tile floors, that I just am not going to do. I have too many dogs and cats to let the floors go, I could build a whole other animal out of the hair after a week.

I know Oscar would like more work and I want to help but I am cautious that I don't send him off to someone who will not let him work my little side job. He lives in a village about 45 min outside of the city and takes a bus in to work for me. Even with that expense, he makes more working for me than he would working as a concrete laborer and he is going to school with the extra time. The work week here is 5.5 days, full time workers work from Monday to mid day Saturday. Things are better now though, there is more employment and the economy is doing well. Mexico did not suffer as much when the US went down, they were not a credit economy. Unfortunately, I see more and more ads for credit and I fear it could happen here as it did up north.

One of my side ventures is managing the houses of expats who are not full time residents. I pay their bills, water their plants, have things fixed and cleaned, deal with stuff in Spanish for them. I took Oscar to one of those houses last week and he weeded the entire garden in a couple hours. So, yeah, he says he is not a gardener but he does know quite a bit about plants. He's been teaching me the names of many that I didn't know, he speaks both Mayan and Spanish.

What a wonderful life you have. God Bless you. I want to come live with you. Since I am 84 maybe he would give me a senior discount on labor. Angel

Jonna you do describe a dream situation. Since starting work full time I have re-hired my former cleaner and even if she only comes once every other week she does a fabulous job. But the weeds in my yard are getting overwhelming and it is one thing I just can't get DH to do.... so I am actively looking for someone who wants to make a few extra bucks and will recognize what is a desirable plant and what is a weed.. not easy!

Hang on to that Oscar! Thumbs up

I think my DH has not learned to tell the difference between the plants and the weeds for obvious reasons....I must say, howevr, he does help with cooking and cleaning so that is a big help. He's definitely a keeper!

Oscar was sick last week and didn't come so the pitaya didn't get picked. Meanwhile the birds got to eat some of the large one, the other two they left alone. Today he returned and immediately got the ladder and picked the fruit for me. I am going to use the end that was bird pecked as seeds to start some more. Thought I'd share the pics of the end result from my first blooms!

I want to plant the seeds in a pot on a column on the roof. I've seen how they grow them in Thailand and I'd like to keep these lower and easier to see and pick the fruit.

There are several different types of pitaya (and yet another that has the same name but is not at all the same fruit) and the ones that grow here have a white flesh inside. Farther south in Honduras and Costa Rica they grow the ones with the pink flesh inside. There are also some that are yellow on the outside, not pink, but I've never seen those.

Congratulations on yours rooting Rhapsody.
