Oak logs will warm you well,
That are old and dry.
Logs of pine will sweetly smell
But the sparks will fly.

Birch logs will burn too fast,
Chestnut scarce at all;
Hawthorne logs are good to last-
Cut them in the fall.

Holly logs will burn like wax,
You may burn them green;
Elm logs like smouldering flax,
No flame to be seen.

Beech logs for winter time,
Yew logs as well;
Green elder logs it is a crime
For any man to sell.

Pear logs and apple logs,
They will scent your room;
Cherry logs across the dogs
Smell like flowers of broom.

Ash logs, smooth and grey,
Burn them green or old,
Buy up all that come your way-
Worth their weight in gold.

Catalpa logs - they don't rot
So plant them with Hens n Chicks
Plant contrasting colors from cool to hot
But plant them very thick.

Love the poem.

I am such a slacker, I still haven't even looked for a log. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will find me. I showed DH the photos so maybe he'll find one! He is in the woods more than I .

Thumbs up Yes, I have done that Andrew. It really works. Lately even the lawn is full of slugs. Wonder if there is something I could use on the lawn to keep the population down?

If i get tired of hand killing them all, I put sliced potatoes out around the plants that I know they feed on. I go back after an hour or two (at night of course) and kill the dozens of slugs that feast on the potato.

Hurray! Now that excites me. Andrew would you go post that tip in this thread. A thread for How to kill slugs without pesticides.
The thread "How to kill off Slugs & Snails (really!!) without pesticides" in Sempervivum forum
That way we will be able to find it easily. Hurray!

Lynn, great deal you got; 50 cents seems cheaper than free for some reason... Confused

Anyway, this is the last planted log I have...it was planted with only one plant and if you had any idea how slow cactus grows then you might have an inkling how old this planting is:
