Tulipa praestans 'Unicum', Susan.

It's just coming out.
Tulipa praestans has multiple flowers per bulb.

Very pretty iris.

Thank you, those variegated tulips are a stunner. I added them to the data base. You have acorns. Green Grin!

Our grape hyacinths 'Mount Hood' are blooming, blue-white at the top. they are tiny compared to the usual height, so probably should re order next fall 7 rake these up.

The bleeding heart I bought from a friend last year, turns out to be a white one. It was a good sized plant so hope that it stays with us. I think they are more tender than the pink form.

Today: still crocuses coming out in previously more shaded places, species tulips still out, daffodils coming out, the few hyacinths coming out, also the first perennials to bloom, notably lungworts and primulas.

That lungwort is always the first to bloom in our back garden, Susan.
One reason is it's location.
Still I always feel uneasy with it.

We have a number of different lungwort cultivars (and I am aware of the strong tendency of lungworts to cross-pollinate).
Still, that particular plant was purchased, on-line, as Pulmonaria longifolia ssp. cevennensis.
But I don't think it is.

It seems to me that the best policy with perennials, in general, is to purchase them, in person and in flower, if at all possible.
Of course, the ability to do so depends greatly on your location.
In flower, because I heard of a past British study that found up to 40% mislabelling of perennial cultivars in garden centres.
Perhaps, however, the situation is better now.

I do most of my shopping online and have not had any problems at all. I do not buy from the big box stores because of the diseases they ignore and spread through their own lack of knowledge, to put it nicely. I do not buy from eBay because the buyer protection expires in 90 days and that is not enough time for a plant to bloom usually never mind a seed.
Thanks for the information on the Lungwort. I have seen some pretty ones and was wondering if they are at all invasive?

Not at all, Susan.
They do seed a bit, but normally not aggressively at all (at least here).
The problem with the seedlings, as said, is if you have more than one type, the seedlings may well be hybrids.
The bees love lungworts.

Below: today.
Other things being equal (viz location) Pulmonaria rubra starts to bloom before any of our other lungworts.
I've found the species, in a moist location, is the only excessive seeder of our lungworts.
'Redstart'.

Primulas in sunny locations are beginning to bloom.
Think primulas are my favourite spring flower.

Think it's appropriate to call it a primrose (Primula vulgaris), Susan.
Think it was purchased as a Primulet.

Love it, Susan.

Bulbs aside, like the way primulas add some strong colour to the spring perennial garden.

I'm still somewhat confused about how far one can go in naming some primulas, Susan.
Primroses and cowslips hybridize in nature and there's been all sorts of artificial hybridizing between these and various other primulas for a long time.

Still, find several different types of Primula very reliable here; notably drumstick primulas (Primula denticulata) and especially Japanese primulas (P. japonica).
I particularly like the latter, especially 'Miller's Crimson'. Find it reseeds in our garden (quite gently) and it's easy to move the rosettes.
Perhaps it's to do with the way we garden as well as to do with our growing conditions.
Will post pictures as they bloom.

I'll name a few other primulas as well.
I've usually had the information from the plant labels at the time of purchase and, from past experience of naming animals, I'm kind of locked into plant nomenclature.
Commercial interests really confuse things, sometimes perhaps to the level of unknowability.
Not wise to be too perfectionist about such things!

Got the original plant at a garden centre in West Vancouver, B.C., when we were visiting Carol's brother, Susan.

Always frustrating that it's so difficult (customs) to bring plants back on the plane from the States.
