It's amazing isn't it? The bluebird fledglings had to drop 10' onto the concrete & they were okay. I guess just like human kids they have flexible bones at that age.

I had to figure the parents knew what they were doing when they chose the nest. Shrug!

There has been this hole in the upright post of our mailbox since before we bought this place. Today as I went to check the mail a bluebird was kind of squawking & I had noticed flew up to the power line as I had approached. I got a funny feeling. So I took me a peek inside the hole. Actually, the hole looks like something gnawed it into being a hole. I had never paid much attention to how it got there. But upon closer inspection it looks like maybe squirrels gnawed it.
Approaching & I see an egg right there at the opening & it's a bluebird egg!
Thumb of 2013-05-23/flaflwrgrl/eb30a0

Now you can see where it looks like it was gnawed & if you look deep inside (embiggen) you can see 2 more eggs
Thumb of 2013-05-23/flaflwrgrl/c057c0

Here's a better shot of the egg at the opening

Oh my. Those bluebirds sure picked a strange spot. I am not sure how great it is to be nesting in metal in the hot Florida sun. Hope they do well.

Oh, that's one of those PVC post thingys Rita. But still..... I know what you mean. But birds nest in what I consider HOT wooden nesting boxes & do fine. Beats the heck out of me.

And now that I looked even closer in the 2nd photo I can see 3 eggs way back there instead of what I originally thought was 2.

Thumbs up Hurray for more eggs. I am glad it is not metal. I guess PVC is good as I have seen bluebird houses made out of PVD type stuff.

We never have bluebirds around here. I Have never seen a love bluebird in my life. I only wish we had bluebirds.

I have another of my plant saucer bird waterers on my kitchen back stoop. I figgured the birds could use it early in the morning before I am up and out in the garden. But late yesterday afternoon the Catbird took a splashy bath while I was in the kitchen watching thru the screen door. I had my garden tools all around it but that didn't bother the Catbird at all.

Tamara, your gifts sound lovely, and nice that the wrens are nesting. We have Mountain bluebirds in our area but they are shy and a little timid and my yard is always full of other birds, I have only seen them visit the boxes a couple of times in the almost 12 years we have lived here, usually the swallows scare them off. Looks like we will have 3 Tree Swallow families this year. Green Grin!

The little House Wren is singing like crazy today. He has been stuffing the small hole chickadee/wren house full of twigs today. He has already stuffed the front yard slotbox house. But I am very concerned. I have yet to see a Mrs Wren.

Hurray! Ann, that is so cool! Lovey dubby

I love the Eastern Bluebird ... I've only seen one here in the 40 years I've lived in this area. It would visit the feeders for mealworms which I still include in the feeders; but no bluebirds ever visit. Sad I hope you will keep us updated on the babies when they hatch!

Nothing new or exciting here, same old same old. I can't remember if I shared these pic's of the Red-bellied Woodpecker a couple of days ago. He wasn't real happy to find an empty suet feeder but shortly after I filled it he was back:

We already had one clutch hatch. The sellers had a little decorative house up by the garage & those babies fledged. Before I ordered the cedar nest boxes from Lowe's we found an old nest box here that had no floor so we made a floor for it & made it removable so we could clean it out for re-use by the bluebirds. We put it up on the right hand post of the pergola so we can watch everything from the back porch.
Thumb of 2013-05-23/flaflwrgrl/804b6c

Here's a close up of the box --- it's seen better days but I expect it will last this year & next

Thumb of 2013-05-23/flaflwrgrl/3722b7

The same bluebird couple who already had the one clutch has decided to use this box for their second clutch & the kids from the 1st batch are helping them. I read that's what they do. So there are eggs in there now & we expect they will hatch around the 1st week of June as we saw them mating on 5/17.

So we have TWO nests going right now that I know of. We have lots of bluebirds here. I walk among the pecan trees & they are everywhere. I want to encourage them & for them to raise more babies. I am against using pesticides & the pecans get web worms so the bluebirds are my natural control of the web worms. Even if they weren't I would have nest boxes for them as I Lovey dubby them. But I'm not putting out meal worms. That way they go after the web worms.

Here are the Tree Swallows at their boxes, hope they don't change their mind about the location. Photos taken through the window so focus isn't great.

Enlarge for best viewing. Green Grin!

The swallows do a lot of squabbling about nest sites.

Wonderful pictures Margaret! I too love the colors of the tree swallows & the sunlight does highlight them so. They have such cute little pouty looking faces.

Yay for you having multiple nests of them. I never really imagined them using nesting boxes.
