Sorry to hear it, Allison. When I had caladiums, both in the front and the back, the deer shredded them. It's always a heartache to see their destruction. I have all winter to try and figure out protection for the daylilies, or eliminate them all.

Thanks, Ronnie. We've tried that, all kinds of sprays and stationery "deterrents" to no avail. Deer mesh does work for protecting gardens and so does my own invention of deer mesh backed up by trellises, with more trellises as entrances/exits to several paths, but I haven't yet solved the issue for the very long garden.

The gardeners on the weekly radio program from Hartford swear by coyote or fox urine.....never tried it, but if the deer don't stop eating my alstromeria, I will........

I've heard of it but cotton rags have to be soaked in the urine, then hung up all over the gardens. Not visually appealing and, after trying so many things, I'm still doubtful.

Not sure if you tried this but I know people that swear by putting hair cuttings from a salon around the garden. They told me it was the only thing that worked out of everything they had tried. Also having a man in the family "mark their territory" may help! lol I think this may help in my yard. I have seen deer out in the trail that abuts my property but for some reason they don't come in the yard. My husband does like to mark his territory! Lol. Shrug!

Our neighbor's husband marked the territory well but now she has a 10' high border of wood at the top of her vegetable garden.

Tonight I saw the deer also ate all daylily buds in a small garden in front.

Folks who used to live next door had one....Nickel....she tried to eat the clothes off my clothesline! Pretty girl, cocoa- colored, but I wasn't happy to have her here.....their dog, Penny, a Weimerarmer, came into my kitchen & stole a loaf of zucchini bread off the counter....my dogs just watched.....
