I stamped my yard work "Done!" about a month ago. It's way too cold for me, I'm a wimp! Those of you who are still gardening in the snow have my admiration. The only thing I'd still like to do is flip my compost one more time before winter. Two bins full of it last I looked, so a big job for me.

That is a big job, Karen. We haven't had any snow here yet but it has been all around me. It's just a matter of time. Shrug!

Enjoys or suffers cold winters
Outside no longer done here, unless D is still raking leaves. Ground not frozen as yet so can't put the pine needle mulch on the irises. Alternate freezing & thawing will heave them, especially the small miniature dwarfs.

I did the grocery shopping early this morning then flipped the compost after that. Sheesh, I'm getting old! That job gets harder and harder for me. But now that it's done, that compost should be finished and ready to spread by spring. Flipping it, even occasionally, really does speed up the process a lot.

I bought a little Nepeta Walker's Low this year, planted it in late spring or early summer. It did well, grew and spread. I see what looks like a little volunteer coming up nearly. I thought the plant was supposed to be sterile? Most of the volunteers out there are weeds, and there are plenty of them.

Spent the afternoon on laundry and housework, bleh!

Karen, I have tons of Walker's Low, and I have never had it reseed. Doesn't mean it didn't though. Can you pinch the seedling and see if it smells like catmint?

Re: Nepeta W.L. : Mine has spread too - some away from the mother plant, but I don't know if it was by seed or by stolon?

Mine do spread by stolon and if a piece stolon gets buried it roots readily.

Darn it! I was hoping to get my bulbs from B&B by now, especially after they charged me more than $40 for shipping ($16.26 for shipping and a $25 surcharge for 3-day shipping, which they insisted on collecting because I'm West of the Rockies). That was 10 days ago!

The shipping charges to the west coast are getting ridiculous. I've been reading about it. I don't know what you got, but stick them in a couple of priority mail boxes for 10.00 each and it gets there in two days. I had three orders for Alaska last year, and they got there by priority mail in 2 days. That would really tick me off.

Were they bulbs that needed special handling?

I'm sure it'll be here on Monday, but the surcharge annoyed me no end when I ordered from Holland Farms a few days later and found they were charging me only $8 for shipping, and they're in Wisconsin, which certainly isn't any warmer than Virginia.

They didn't need special handling, Polly, other than being kept from freezing, I guess. Just a bunch of tulips and daffodils. Good thing the bulbs were half-price!

Polly,

The seedling is too small to pinch. And I guess it's possible it spread from a stolen. It's tiny, but the leaves definitely look like Walker's Low. I was just surprised to see it there.

Oh, well. It isn't as if I don't already have enough to plant this weekend. Sue and I went shopping yesterday at a couple of local nurseries and I bought three flats of 4-inch plants and three clematises. One flat is all Primula acaulis, another is all ruffled pansies, and the third is a mixture of cool stuff. The clems are Freckles, Belle of Woking, and Rebecca. Belle of Woking has blooms and buds.
