Tracey, my season started yesterday. As I checked the old photos, I noticed that in previous years, Hoki's buds were typically ready to open in late May, around May 27. Therefore, this season has begun unusually early
This year, the Colorful Butterfly is the first to begin opening, and I'm eagerly anticipating seeing it fully unfurled.
To initiate my season earlier than the Japanese cultivars, I planted some Central Plains varieties: the Black Dragon Hold a Glorious Flower, Sapphire Blue, Necklace with Precious Pearls, and Colorful Butterfly.
People said that Central Plains cultivars may not be optimal for our climate, a point which held true (so far) in my garden. While Black Dragon is stunning and holds a special place in my heart
it doesn't yield as many blooms as the classic Japanese cultivars
Pearl Necklace will finally bloom this year after three years of being planted (originally planted in the fall of 2021). Sapphire Blue, planted at the same time, has yet to bloom, likely due to squirrel damage in its first spring. Hopefully next year
However, Colorful Butterfly stood out. It bloomed immediately in its very first year and has continued to do so, although the plant remains relatively small, I appreciate its compact size, making it an ideal choice for smaller spaces
I highly recommend this variety.
