Nice blooms Bonnie, it's good to see signs of spring. Nothing blooming here yet, but the Ice King staffs and Hyacinths will be the 1st to bloom here. I see some crocus leaves up, but no buds.

I don't understand why you guys are all a good bit north of me & yet you all have noses peaking out of the ground & I have nothing yet. Confused Confused Confused I would think mine would be showing first.

Annette, yours are further along than mine are. My crocus that are blooming are the species crocus. The other crocus will bloom later this month. I cant wait to see your Ice King blooms.

Ann, we probably grow different kinds of daffs and crocuses. What is usually the first to bloom for you?

On those bulbs you only planted this past fall, they will be comming up later than bulbs already established in ground from previous years.

Bonnie I don't have any crocuses - only daffs thus far. You ask a good question & Rita knows what I've been doing hence her reply which I had not thought of myself.
In March we will have been in this house only 2 years so all bulbs I planted have been after that time. Last year I planted daffs in December and this year I planted daffs beginning in fall.
So there's the answer.... none of the daffs I planted have been established long enough yet. The former owner planted a few cute little daffs & they are all up but not blooming yet.

Thanks ladies for seeing what I could not see myself. Now I won't worry anymore. Thumbs up

No, don't worry Ann. I find that old established bulbs always emerge and bloom weeks before the more beautiful and recently planted types. Also, species types seem to be earlier.... for me at least. And, the ones of mine that are coming up to bloom are on a south facing slope. The ones on the north facing slope have not emerged yet. Even the early crocus on the north slope are just breaking ground. I usually always have a few early daffodils open on Valentine's day. I don't know what the daffys are doing trying to bloom this early.

Thumbs up

I think it's like the oddball ones that bloomed for me at Christmas. At least here, it was cold really early -- we had our first frost and a heavy one at that on Nov. 4th -- WAY too early for us. From there we had a run of up & down temps., then around Thanksgiving we began about 3 weeks of frost every morning. And then we went so warm you would think it's summer. WAY too warm for the time of year. Now finally we are seeing more normal winter temps. I think the bulbs don't know what to do.

Ann, I think you're right. Some of those Daffs require very short chill times, so they'll bloom anytime its warm enough after that. Kind of like Forsythia blooms that open after a few mild days in winter.

Neal, my forsythia started blooming at Christmas. I think the last few years weather has them very confused. I usually get a few blooms during warm spells in the winter and even a few on the quince but this Christmas it was full of blooms. I really like early blooms by a week or two but I really don't like things blooming entirely out of their season.

One year the forsythias here were all done blooming by the time spring arrived. Its a bummer when spring comes and its bloomed out.

I don't think I'd rely on Forsythia blooms on timing anything, LOL. For Rose pruning, I'd stick to watching for swelling of the growth buds, and prune then.

The blooms have started in GA. I've started a thread for blooms 2015, and posted pictures there.

Here's reticulated iris Gordon.

Thanks Caroline! This is just a teaser.

I'm just lucky to get some early blooms, we're predicted to be having snow/sleet/freezing raining on Monday, and cold weather for the rest of next week, with it going down to 8 degrees on Wednesday night Crying

Some have some buds --- looks like some deformity but I expect that's due to their not having settled in yet.

I have to look them up on my garden map to see who is who & don't have time right now. I know this next photo is for Species Daffodil (Narcissus jonquilla)
