Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hooray for finished Annette!!!

We're warm here with highs in the mid 60's for the next few days then dipping down into the 50's. Lows in the 30's & 40's.

Thanks j and Ann, it's a relief to know that I'm finally done. We're getting warmer weather as well early this week, then it cools down again. We've got a long way before winter is over.

I was just thinking last night to bump this thread and see if any of you southerners are seeing sprouts from early bulbs. After a couple of weeks of consistent cold, we had a mild sunny day yesterday. Lots of little green noses right at the surface of the soil out there.

Annette, glad you got 'em all in the ground! They'll root just fine, the soil won't freeze at their depth or even in your zone I don't imagine.

Thanks Neal! The last set of bulbs I planted in late December put out roots in 1 week Smiling My soil does freeze in the shady areas of my garden. The N. Delibes were planted in my back bed that gets full sun, so no frozen ground there. Thanks to all of our recent rain, it was so easy to dig deep enough to get them planted.

My 'Ice King' continue to grow, and the newly planted 'Moris Gudanov' tulips are sprouting, along with some of the newly planted 'Hyacinth City of Haarlem'. The muscari and Dutch iris leaves have been up for months. I also noticed that my "Golden Trumpet" daffs (I'm sure there's a more specific name) have also sprouted.

After a couple of weeks of below freezing temps, several nights in the teens, I was curious how frozen the soil would be. Looks like just the top inch or so, and in mulched areas only the mulch was frozen. I spread a little mulch yesterday, and found I just had to break up the surface, move those chunks aside, and then could easily shovel what was underneath.

We got down to 12 degrees last week, and some days it stayed in the 30's. Thanks to this, soil in my pots are frozen on the shady side of the house.

It seems like a gardener' work is never done. I have to fix my garden bed by the sidewalk, where the soil washed away thanks to our recent deluge of rain. I'll have to replace some soil and pine bark mulch there.

Thank goodness I had landscape mesh down, that prevented all of the bulbs from washing away. Some of the tulips and hyacinths are exposed, and I had to replant some of the crocus bulbs that were at the edge of the bed.

Could the landscape landscape mesh have caused the wash by preventing the water from soaking in? I often see this happen, the fabric does not allow penetration, just causes the wash to rise on the slick surface and float away the mulch.

Hi Larry, it's more like netting with 1/4 inch squares that I use to cover the plants and it is secured to the ground with landscape pins. The deer and rabbits eat my plants, and the chipmunks and squirrels dig up the bulbs.

I get a lot of water flowing through the area if we have really heavy rains, because of how the yard is graded. The run off from the neighbor's yard also flows through this area Crying This only occurs maybe 2-3 times per year.

I have some well established Earlicheer up but no buds yet. These are ones planted by the former owner. Thus far, the ones I've planted aren't showing yet but it is difficult to see them being planted out in the pecan grove & meadows -- we never got so consistently cold this year that the grass went into total dormancy so there's a lot of green out there & hard to see little noses at this point.
Those 4 noid bulbs I rescued from the grocery store are all up though & 2 have bloomed & done but of the remaining 2, 1 has buds.

No tulips here so it's only daffs.

While trying to clear oak leaves from the garden (I still have a lot of brown leaves on the trees) I did see these little guys.

crocus
Thumb of 2015-01-28/grannysgarden/e82bd1

The hyacinths are breaking ground and they have a little bud bunch nested in the centers.

and I noticed these guys up already. I do not know what the weather will bring so I just enjoy whatever blooms whenever it does.

Oh my so early. No hope of anything blooming here as the ground is covered in lots of snow. Good to know spring is arriving in some areas though.

I do love bulbs. After a summer of heat and humidity, and a fall of clean up and winterizing, I drag my weary old bones inside to hibernate for the cold wet days of winter. At the first warm days, early in the year, a bulb wakes up and decides to poke its nose out to see if we humans have not totally destroyed the earth yet. Seeing that it is safe, more or less, to come out, it bravely decides to celebrate with a lovely flower. I think of these little blossoms as a great gift and a promise of garden blooms to come.

Even in cold weather, I'm seeing more green pips each day. Some of last years Tulips are looking like they will return, and lots of new ones are showing. After several years of not adding bulbs, I'm so glad I've planted plenty the last couple of years- it's been the best incentive for me to tidy up beds in fall and have everything ready in spring for the show.
