Darcy..rabbits leave it be.
Everything leaves it be.
As long as it gets water but no wet feet...it is happy.
I plant it high in this NC clay
No fertilizer
It grows moderately fast and looks beautiful in all seasons.
One day after years of beauty...it will start to look ...dull...unwell....
Inspection will show nothing wrong.
In a few short weeks...DEAD
The heartbreak of Daphne..time to buy another....but it has paid its way 10 fold.

djinnevada said:I agree with Rosie on the Daphne...I first saw it at a nursery here a few years ago but was scared off by the price

Be aware that Daphne has a tendency to just up and die. For no reason. Does have a great scent.

In no particular order, Osmanthus fragrans aurantiacus, Citrus, Gardenia, Old fashioned Cottage PInks, Moonvine, several cultivars of Camellia sasanqua, Lemon Verbena, Ginger Lily, Night blooming Jasmine. I love to plant for fragrance almost as much as for my birds, bees and butterflies.

Thank you Jim D. for mentioning the common milkweed - Asclepias syriaca. It grew wild on the edges of our orchard in Penticton, in the Okanagan Valley, B.C. when I was growing up. What a heavenly fragrance those pale pink flowers threw out. Another wild plant, the arrowleaf balsamroot sunflower - Balsamorhiza sagittata, covered the slopes in May. The honey-like fragrance was so strong, it felt like it could transport you to heaven. Another strong, sweet yellow blossom in spring is the Oregon Grape blossom - Mahonia aquifolium.

Lilacs are abundant with fragrance. In the mid 80's we bought a house built in 1912 with an acre and a half of land that had been a nursery, "Riverview" in the 20's, 30's 40's and 50's. There were about 20 varieties of single and double Lilacs, unnamed. There were also an assortment of "Summer" Lilacs that bloomed two weeks later than the regular Syringa vulgaris varieties with quite a different fragrance. These were the Syringa x prestoniae varieties. We looked forward to long fragrant walks through the garden in the 28 years that we lived there.

Japanese Lilac or Syringa reticulata is a wonderful tree lilac with long panicles of white fragrant blossoms in early summer, at my new home in a Seniors Co-op. I have brought many of my favourite fragrant plants along. The ones not yet mentioned in this forum would be the honey sweet smell of the blue perennial Batchelor Button, Centaurea montana; Sweet Rocket or Dames Violet - Hesperis matronalis; Phlox paniculata; and various of the fragrant Peonies.

Sorry to go on so long, but fragrance in the garden is one of my key enjoyments in life. Thank you all for your sharings. Group hug

Thank you Nora for your reminders!! I definetely consider fragrance a chief criterion for my gardening. For instance I underplanted my rose garden with stocks so that they will add their fragrance, particularly when the rose bloom/ flush is on the low side. However you've given me many more options to add! Hurray! I tip my hat to you. Thanks again. All the way from the southern hemisphere while we are getting ready for the best season:fall. Arturo

Yesterday I had the thrill of smelling an intoxicating fragrance from an Edgeworthia shrub, also called the Chinese Paper Bush or Yellow Daphne, (not related to the pink and white Daphnes). It is only marginally hardy here in Castlegar, but an enthusiastic gardening friend fell in love with the fragrance in a Kelowna greenhouse, and had to have it!

Another fragrance loving gardener in Robson, had a Cytissus battandieri or Pineapple Broom Tree for many years, also a Zone 7 plant, on the south side of her house. Robson, a community across the Columbia River from Castlegar, was a well known fruit growing area in the early 1900's to the 1960's, know as the Banana belt of the Kootenays. As gardeners in Robson, about a Zone 6, we tried to push the boundaries with many different plants.
Thumb of 2016-04-14/HemNorth/ea4b86 This is the Edgeworthia or Chinese Paper Bush

This is Cytissus battandieri, the Pineapple Broom Tree, and it really smells of fresh pineapple! I googled these plants, and I downloaded the images from the web info pages. I've never done that before. I hope it's legitimate. Whistling

The only thing that is fragrant in my gardens are Hyacinth and daffodils. I was looking at my Lilacs today they have buds and I cannot wait for them to start blooming. The Lilacs and Mock Orange are my favorite in the Spring.

I have a winter honeysuckle blooming for the last month. It smells like lemons. I love it. It even flowered when the snow was blowing!

The fringe tree is blooming. It is a clean and sweet scent. We call it Grandpa's Beard.
Some call it a small tree..time it wasmore like a shrub when I purchased...trained it to this shape.

I have heard they root real easily from cuttings...thinking of starting two or three, this one is 15 years.
