We finally had a killing frost, only a week after the weather forecast had predicted it! Now I have tomatoes ripening in the basement, a box of acorn squash in the kitchen, and the garden cart with more assorted squash in the garden shed. Have lots of garden clean up to do along with flower bed renovation, and in about another 2 weeks will be planting garlic. The row of old, dead and dieing Lombardy Poplar trees is finally down, in a nice, not so neat pile waiting to be made into firewood, which is much better than having them come down one at a time wherever they wanted to fall, as 3 of them had already done over the past few months. After the mess of brush and stumps is cleared away, probably next spring, we will plant some other, fast growing trees. A few leaves are showing signs of turning into those lovely fall colors. Down in the valley, potato harvest is in full swing and some farms are still making hay. Cattle are being moved along the roads from summer pastures to fall ones. It does look funny to have a whole herd of cattle going over the freeway overpass, complete with people on horseback and a whole bunch of herding dogs. Our off and on ramps have cattle guards built into them.
