Fall hurries along like leaves in the drive, headed for some important appointment.

Stan has two fields of hay down here at home. He and Jess unloaded the load from Melissa's last night so the wagons are all empty again. I heard him tell a friend yesterday that, yes he did say he'd quit milking when he was 62, but he still has a few months left. Actually, 6 months, but who's counting?

I've got a rayon scarf sitting in vinegar to set the goldenrod dye. The rayon comes out very pastel.

Off to get breakfast ready. Mom has an eye appointment this morning and I'm her driver.

Thanks for the month start, Kathleen.

Neighbor is starting beans. Well, he would be if he wouldn't plug the combine. LOL Guess the SU might have to run the machine later today, depending on whether or not he also wants to bag some late planted corn as corn silage.

I'm glad we still have a leader, even if not officially.

Due to the fall rains, I'm still shredding pastures - cutting the weeds off them to expose the recovering grass. I am using herbicide on the horse paddocks behind the barn that have suddenly grown up in pigweed as they also have been attacked by army worms, so there is no visible grass in spots. I finished cleaning up the winter garden section I plan to plant; the pigs did most of the job, but they don't like peppers or what we cal bin Laden weed. It is late to be starting the winter garden, but it has stayed so warm it will be iffy for some of the seeds and started plants. And then there is an electrical black-out in part of the barn that needs investigating...

We finally had a killing frost, only a week after the weather forecast had predicted it! Now I have tomatoes ripening in the basement, a box of acorn squash in the kitchen, and the garden cart with more assorted squash in the garden shed. Have lots of garden clean up to do along with flower bed renovation, and in about another 2 weeks will be planting garlic. The row of old, dead and dieing Lombardy Poplar trees is finally down, in a nice, not so neat pile waiting to be made into firewood, which is much better than having them come down one at a time wherever they wanted to fall, as 3 of them had already done over the past few months. After the mess of brush and stumps is cleared away, probably next spring, we will plant some other, fast growing trees. A few leaves are showing signs of turning into those lovely fall colors. Down in the valley, potato harvest is in full swing and some farms are still making hay. Cattle are being moved along the roads from summer pastures to fall ones. It does look funny to have a whole herd of cattle going over the freeway overpass, complete with people on horseback and a whole bunch of herding dogs. Our off and on ramps have cattle guards built into them.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

I love the idea of cattle guards built into the roads! I could use a few of those as I move my cows down the road fairly regularly and someone - usually a heifer - always decides to go exploring.

Trees keep falling here too due to the recent summer droughts. Yesterday I planned to shred the famous triangular pasture which has about 10 acres of sand spurs (grass burs) growing in the pointy end. A mulberry tree had split in two and fallen behind the shop effectively blocking in all three tractors. So I spent quite a bit of time cutting it up so I could move it before I could get my favorite shredding tractor out. It has no cab, but is the most nimble and handy for dodging around the trees and awkward pointy fencelines. A dark cloud was forming to the east, but our weather seldom comes from there - HA! After about an hour, it poured rain; my boots filled up and I was sitting in a rather unpleasant puddle, but I still thought, "Much better than commuting to town and working at some desk." I guess I am an unrepentant farmer!

I see that the Bradford pear trees around town are just beginning to turn colors for fall. Some purples and yellows showing on them already. They are the first to show any fall colors around here. Lots of Bradfords used as street trees around town.

It's shaping up to be a brown year for me -- not a lot of pop out there. Although perhaps it's too early.

I think it is just that it is early for leaves to change colors.

My sister came over the North Cascades Pass (northern Washington) last weekend and it should be spectacular at this time -- she said it had SOME color but nothing like usual. She also said her aspen on the east side were more brown-gold than yellow-gold. Not sure what affects the color, but it is sure shaping up to a rather subdued fall for me.

It is still too early to even start looking for us. We rarely get any interesting fall color; the poison ivy is, perhaps, the most consistent performer.

Deb, where does your sister live? I lived at Winthrop from 1950-55, long before they built that highway to the west side. The road ended near Mazama at that time, and we had to go to Wenatchee, then over Stevens Pass to get to Seattle.
