Look at the images that Stush has posted and then look at the one I posted. Mine are the normal looking branches. Stush's plants have gone in a new wierd direction. Usually, the crest looks like a fan that appears somewhere on the plant.

Bob, your Hernia is a hybrid with Stapelia or something simular. That is why the stems are so much larger and the flower is typical Stapelia. If shipping wasn't such a hassle I would love a stem cutting. I purchase many from 'Miles to Go' and 'Smoley's Gardenworld' but I havn't seen one like that. Enjoy it my friend.
That crested Hurnia is dead now. Last winter it just shriveled up and died. It did bloom every summer before cresting. I purchased on ebay another one crested the same and it also died for me. Most of my other Asclepiads (family name of Hernias and Stapelias and a lot more) are doing very well but not blooming. It seems that most of my plants takes a few years to size up to bloom.

Thanks for the input Stush.
I thought it to be a Huernia from the shape.
The flower is star like so I can see the possibility of a Hybrid.
Probably will never find a name so i now have a beautiful noid.
I do not even remember who gave me the cutting it was so many years ago.
A very slow grower.
I love the Stapelias, especially the Giant Star.
My favorite for many years has been S. leendertzii "Burgandy Bell"
It never opens flat and has a great odor LOL

Bob, Your plant is Stapelia leendertziae. I have a few myself and they are very slow growing. I had mine for two years and so far just happy for it to be alive.
I plan on buying S. leendertzii come spring.

You are confusing me. I see the two different spellings but do not find any difference in the search engines. The plant I have is far from slow growing. It takes a few months to root from cuttings and then will become a foot long snake in one year. It always grows out of its pot within 6 months. Maybe it is my climate since all Stapelias and Huernias grow like weeds once they are started.
Please enlighten me as to the difference and why mine is ...iae instead of ..ii
Shrug!

Sorry Bob, my spelling is terrible even with spell checker. People who gave me some called it that so I keep the mistake going. Times even spell checker gives up on me. It is just this year starting to take off but no flowers as of yet. Can't wait till it blooms so I can tell the grandkids that it eats mice. Joking.

Eats Mice. Hilarious!
It could be very convincing with the wonderful smell.
They might even believe you. Rolling on the floor laughing
The cutting you received must not have had any roots to have taken so long.
I see you like Sansevieras
Do you have S, Golden Hahnii variegate?
I could send you a small box with one San and a cutting of my noid.
for the cost of postage.

It was to be a Huernia Pillansii but when it bloomed, it was way too dark.

Thumb of 2013-12-06/Stush2019/fe03e2

Also buying Huernia mix seeds. Appox. 100 seeds so I should be living with a lot of Huernias. Hilarious! I'll keep posted.

X Luckhoffia buekmannii (= x Hoodiapelia buekmannii) Just bloomed for me. Purchased last year from 'Miles to Go' and was surprised to see it blooming already. This one was fussy and I almost lost it to rot. Glad it took off this year.

Put it next to my blooming Stapelia to hope the flys go to it as well and maybe I will get some seeds.

With blooms over 13 inches! Hurray! First time in the last few years and two at that. With lots of flies so I am sure to get seeds.

Thumb of 2016-09-19/Stush2019/cf4ce8

My yellow ones all look the same except this one has the largest blooms I have ever seen on a Huernia. Over 1-1/2". And blooms over a long time, again and again all summer.

And a new seedling that bloomed for me this year for the first time.
Looks like a stripe less zebra. For now, I'll call it 'Sunshine' since it's a hybrid from seed.

Daisy,
That plant looks exactly like the one I got called Huernia qunta including the 5 ribbed sides. Could be Huernia primulina because it was an open pollinated seedling. Also looked up on internet and shows a whiteish with red specks flower. Where did you get yours?
