It takes about 9 months to mature, so spring is generally when you can see them pop. The 'seam' along the top will become quite visible shortly before they open, so if you keep an eye out for that you can bag them then. Old pantyhose work well, or the net bags onions are sometimes sold in are great too.

Goodgreen or anyone else who might be looking for some good wholesale plants. I'm have a minor (or major) brain fart right now and can't remember the name of the place....Grandiflora. I am registered there as a vendor so get plants at wholesale. In addition to good prices to start, if you bring cash, they give discounts.

If you are interested in coming up to this area, I can set some time aside to take you over there. You will be in plant hog heaven as they grow/carry just about anything you could want. Trees, bushes, natives, tropicals, perennials, succulents, water plants.

I need to get a current catalog and I can give availability and pricing.

Came back to give the correct name and post this link to their website: http://www.grandiflora.pro/ check out their search category under products for flower herbaceous plants.

Jan, Please tell me where are the Arctic Wetlands and are you sure they are in Florida?? And Molly where is the Tundra - these places sound awfully cold which I suppose is appropriate considering what the weather has been.

Sorry I;ve been quiet. I have the cold to beat all colds. Gee Madeleine, give a gardener a few days of warmth and sunshine and see how soon they forget the past few months. lol. I did call in sick at work today. No sense spreading it as I work in "cubicle city". Very close proximity. I wish all my co-workers would do the same. Being a federal employee we do get generous sick and vacation time but many abuse it and then when they really need it, they don't have any so they come in sick and contaminate everything in the office. Oh well. Even with the cold, I was able to get out in the garden and do some serious cleanup. Even the neighbor remarked how "naked" it looks out front now, I was probably a sight to see with my kleenex and gatorade. The theme was pretty much "weed" cough, weed, sneeze, weed blow, weed cough, ...
I will probably stay home tomorrow as well. I would probably have a hard time explained how I got sunburnt while sick in bed. Rolling on the floor laughing Fortunately they are too aware of my passion for gardening as I have donated to many of their gardens over the years. On the bright side, many plants I though lost are either sprouting or have green wood where they were but back. I was able to get my son out to help with some of the pruning and I taught him how to determine by feel and trimming whether things are dead. We had a running joke between us since he was little. Since I propagate and grow for resale for a little extra income, I have always had a yard full of plants in pots of all sizes. When I upsize plants I usually use fresh soil and leave the old soil in pots to amend the yard soil or add to the compost bin. I would usually leave them to the side to accumulate. At about the time, I asked my son to help it was winter and some of the plants were dormant. I would point out which plants were for the compost. He would often pick up a dormant one with spent leaves still attached and say "What about this one, it's dead" I would then reply "it's not dead, it's sleeping for the winter" Now occasionally, like everyone, I will have a plant die in the pot. If we come across one while working, I will tell him to put it in the compost pile and he will always reply "Mom, it's not dead, it's sleeping" Leave it to him to find a way out of doing extra work. Hilarious!
So how is everyone else's week going?

I'm here. I have done SO much yardwork and things are shaping up nicely. Taking a break now but back at it this coming weekend! The weather has been just perfect for working outside. The only thing slowing me down is my aging body. Sad

Dave has now given us an area for articles. As I prefer to keep this site as a free membership, I can't afford to pay for articles so I am hoping some members will be willing to donate some articles to get us started. They can be reprints of articles printed elsewhere as long as you retained the rights to the articles. Please let me know if you would be interested.

Also, I still need help in building the Florida Native Plant Database. If we could get just a few new entries each day, it should build up in no time.

Hi! Well, here I am, too...can't be left behind. Finally cleared away the tons of oak leaves from the gigantic tree I share with my neighbor. Going around closely searching for signs of green on the Bougainvillea, Schefflera etc...very small glimpses of green, mostly low on the trunk, but they're there! The dogwood is making tiny buds(leaves just now) and my Mustard greens and Okra are just sprouting in the raised bed. Say what you will, SPRING is wonderful!

Nancy, they are ceramic pieces on a painted acrylic background. I make, glaze and fire them- I get this deep, shiny color with the ceramic glazes. For this painting I have used leaves and flowers from the garden, put them on the clay and got the impression, cut them out of the soft clay & glazed & fired them

American Farms sells to the public in Naples on Airport Road just a few blocks north of Pine Ridge, next to the big Citrus store. Their selection is great, their prices are good. I shop there a lot.
