Nice Gerry - you show it who's boss!

In happy news, it seems as though RED BULL has pulled through the winter. We have a couple nasty days to come so I might cover it with a styrofoam box.

I spent the last 3 hours unpotting, soaking in Banrot and repotting a bunch of plants. I think the combination of the ProMix being too wet and the crowns being low did the most damage. I repotted in a 2.5:1 mix of pine bark mulch to ProMix to aid in drainage. They are also inside out of the rain.

We had the opposite problem with the potting soil this year.
Too much sphagnum moss in the mix caused the plants to dry out quickly.
All winter, it was water, water, water, and the seedlings did not grow as well.

Even when using the same brands, the mix is different each year, so we
mainly check the mix before buying, but this one fooled me last fall.

Google Chrome just underline what it perceived to be a misspelled word then I just leave it alone or go in and correct it. It always underline daylily.

Every time I type the word "daylily" the software on my Mac immediately changes it to "day lily" -- and also "tet" keeps changing to "get" and there are a couple of others -- so just before I hit the Finished button I always have to proof my message and change everything back to the way I want it, and still sometimes the software makes those changes again on something at the last second. But I've really gotten used to proofing before sending now, so usually I catch them -- or I can go back and Edit to make the changes once again. And my IPad does the same thing.

I was worried about Larry's Obsession too, but noticed today it's got a little green sprout coming up! Hurray!

---So far the only dl I've lost is Sinister Minister, but I'm keeping a close eye on Gilded Butterfly. --The other plants have taken a hit though, unless they're really late showing growth we've lost a lot of ornamental grass clumps, hollyhocks, and hen and chickens.--Some of the plants we've had for years... wasn't even worried about losing them.

Considering the weather we had in January and February, I consider myself very fortunate to say I lost none of my cultivars or mature seedlings this winter. We had a couple of days with low temperatures about 10 degrees in January along with snow a week later, then a major ice storm in mid-February with considerable damage to trees and shrubs. However, if you watched the Masters Golf Tournament last week, you could see the weather that we have been having the last couple of weeks - mostly clear skies with temperatures in the mid-70's or mid-80's, and the daylilies have been growing like crazy. I thought I had lost two evergreen plants, but about 10 days ago one fan appeared on Red Balls of Fire and late last week two fans popped up out of the ground on Tree of Gascone. I did lose some fans here and there among both evergreens and semi-evergreens, but my biggest learning from this cold weather (Yes, I know - - cold for us here in east-central Georgia, not for where many of you live!!) is that every seedling may be different, even those with the same parents. For example, I have two seedlings that will be blooming for the fifth year this spring - - one is Forestlake Ragamuffin X Painting the Roses Red while the other is Painting the Roses Red X Forestlake Ragamuffin. I lined them out into double fans in the same bed last fall. I had considered both to be evergreen as up to now they had performed about the same in terms of winter hardiness, multiplying, number of buds, rebloom, etc. The one from the PRR X FLR cross may have lost a fan or two this winter, but most did just fine and I presume they will bloom this spring. The one from the FLR X PRR cross was badly damaged. I lost one double fan completely and several other plants froze back to the extent that only one of the fans remains while several more lost all foliage, but have come back with several small fans of new growth. Based on the other Ev and Sev plants that I have, I would now judge the first plant as either a hardy evergreen or a semi-evergreen (some of my evergreens suffered less loss this winter than some of my semi-evergreens) while I would call the second an evergreen, perhaps a tender evergreen.
There's always something new to learn about daylilies!

Sorry to hear about the winter losses. Sad Most everything is starting to show growth now that the snow and ice have finally melted off the beds this past weekend. So far only the last remaining evg cultivars are looking like they may be gone, most of the evg's were taken out a few years ago when we had a fairly mild winter(for zone 4) with no snow cover.
In one of the threads last fall I commented that I had purchased two auction plants at the Lilyhemmer meeting in mid Oct. and planted them when I got home. I'm happy to report they are both coming up......and I do not have to confess my stupidity for buying and planting that late this far north Smiling

Hard freeze tonight, so will soon see how the daylilies can
weather these low night temps. New plants are under
protective coverings, but the rest that wintered here, parent
plants and seedlings are on their own. Can't cover them all. Crying Grumbling

I think my Bullfrog Kisses is no longer in existence.

My problem with the auto correct is that even when I know there is a word with a problem, I often hit "send" and then see the mistake......

Thanks Glen for the nice thought. Appreciate it. The low temps set records.

It definitely was a hard freeze. Most shrubs and trees about to bloom, well, the blooms
are toast. I don't know for sure about the extent of damage to the daylilies that were not
covered. Those covered are okay. The foliage on the uncovered ones was certainly frozen with ice on them. They didn't look too bad though when the ice melted, some leaves turned black, but tonight is another freeze. Hopefully, this does not kill the entire plants.
We had rain, cold, and wind while out covering stuff. At least everything is still alive as
of now, just a less colorful spring. As for the fruit and veggie farmers, I hope they had a way to save their crops.

Sorry Jan about your Bullfrog Kisses. Maybe it will peep out later, hopefully.
I don't have that one, but it has been on my list for awhile. That one is so pretty.

Even in my area we are still getting really cold weather (for our area). It got down in the 30s on Monday night after having severe thunderstorms with flooding. I don't know how much rainfall we have actually had over the winter and recently but the rivers near us are overflowing so much that the parking area and the access roads down to them are flooded and you can't even get down to the river; you would have to unload your boat right off the main road.

But I'm hoping the cold is about over because we are getting scapes and the buds wouldn't like another freeze or two.

We need lots of bloom in about three weeks for the Region 12 meeting in Pensacola and the weather isn't helping that much.
