Thank you!!! I have no idea of what the cross was. It was one I got really cheap on the LA because the tags had washed away in heavy rain a couple of years ago. But they were from Ed Burton (Gramps), so I know they have good parents somewhere.

chalyse said:Getting a plain yellow from eyed parents seems pretty normal to me Shrug! Here are some of the ancestor plants behind the two eyed parents of the yellow seedling:

Since all daylilies originated from the plain daylilies I really do expect to have plain ones thrown in there (more than I'd like) since the genes are there. I don't go back and look at ancestors of the ones I use to see what I may end up with but it just catches you off guard when all of a sudden in the middle of patterened or eyed blooms there is a yellow nodding

If there is really a question in my mind about a cross I will go look up the parentage history but not usually.

Weird thing about the 50 seeds I got on Ebay is that 65 seeds arrived and all but 3 sprouted.
(But other buyers report poor appearance on the seedling when they bloom)

I've gotten seeds on LA and out of 5 seeds, I figure I'm good if 3 or 4 sprout, although sometimes all 5 will.
(Then I proceed to otherwise sometimes kill off the little suckers so am not ready for 5 seeds @ $200!)

I also notice today that a famous hybridizer has an Ebay store.
I am NOT an especially big fan of Ebay, but it can be a marketing tool.

I have to agree with Michele about seed germination. There is no way a seller can tell if seeds will germinate. I had a first time buyer of some of my seeds email me that none of them germinated. That is suspect to me. Makes you wonder how the seller was trying to germinate them. I have been planting my own seeds every year for the past 5 plus years and I rarely get no germination. I ended up replacing all of the buyers seeds. For the first time this year I am trying the water and peroxide method and to my surprise I have had less germination than if I were to just plant them in pots and let nature do the rest.

I've had fabulous success germinating seeds in water and peroxide and kept in the fridge. I've got some old seeds in there now, and they are slower to germinate, but they are all doing their thing. Can't imagine doing it any other way!

Yes, and I've had pretty much 100% success when germinating fresher seeds. The ones I've got in there now are 2 to 3 years old, and they are doing good.

I've used water and peroxide, but never used that in the refrigerator method Natalie is using.
Will have to check that out.

Thanks Natalie, Someone else told me different and it hasn't worked all that great. They said to leave them in the fridge for 2 weeks and then take them out and let them stay at room temperature until they germinate. That hasn't worked that great. I am putting them all back in the fridge.

I always keep mine in the fridge until they germinate. If I'm going to start them later, I just keep them in there dry. When it's time to germinate, I add the water and peroxide, and half of a makeup removal pad that is damp, and put them back in the fridge. Works really well for me! I keep them in the bottom crisper drawer, but I am not sure if it matters where you keep them.

I've had more than one person tell me that they will not germinate without some warmth. Not true, since they do just fine in the fridge!

Interesting ways to germinate seeds. I've tried numerous ways and did have decent success using the water and peroxide in the crisper drawer one year. Used the same method the next year and the germination rate was disappointing. Go figure! But I've always had success just sowing them... though I do use Spring Water with peroxide to water them. That has always been my most successful method to get a good percentage rate of germination (80-100% germination). I had that success with all the seeds I sowed this past Winter except for one packet of seeds I won on LA. Not a single seed germinated. They sent me bonus seeds and a couple of those did germinate. But the auction win seeds were a bust. Rather disappointing!

Michele - That is very interesting about the 2 eyed parents producing a solid colored bloom. It is a beauty indeed! But certainly not what I would have expected!

I have some Dragonfly Dawn x Dragonfly Dawn cross plants I am currently growing. I am curious to see what the blooms look like on the different plants. I had one person tell me that it would produce solid colored blooms. Who knows? But I agree, it sure is fun to see what surprise is in store when bloom time arrives! I think that is one of the main reasons (besides a small garden budget) that I enjoy growing daylilies from seeds! I love the anticipation and the unknown! The gene pool is so diverse with the current culitvars! You never know what you may wind up with!

So far, with H2O2 and crisper, I have only two seeds germinate from 60-odd seeds this year. I have done something wrong. I waited till I thought they were germinating before planting. That was at the end of March. Then nothing. I had put them into Yates seed starter soil. Crying

Well just goes to show you Glen that sometimes they just won't germinate and we really have no way of knowing that.

Glen - I had that happen to me too. I don't use that method anymore. I just plant them in good professional potting mix (in styrofoam cups) and then water them sparingly with Spring Water (bottled) and Hydrogen Peroxide mixed in. I consistently have a very good success rate using that particular method which I've been using for the past 3 years. I then set the cups in a sunny window. I only watered them once a week. I think often the seeds will rot or the seedlings will develop fungus or something and they die. I swear by H2O2 and watering only once a week, as it prevents the root rot or rotting of seeds.

How do daylily farms get enough plants to sell off early hybrids if they don't use seeds from the original registered plant?
Some plants don't put out prolifs and others take a long time to divide.

As fast as a new introduction spreads market wise, someone must be using seeds to reproduce it.
Thanks for any input on this question related to seeds. I've been wondering.

They can't use seeds from the plant because it won't come true to the mother plant. They usually wait up to 5 years to sell an introduction to make sure they have enough of it. I imagine they do plant the prolifs also. By lining them out also, they increase more rapidly. Some use BAP which causes the plants to increase more rapidly but I am just guessing at this by saying the majority do not use any chemical means to increase plants.

The seeds from a plant will produce an entirely different plant.

It seems we can't stress enough the fact that daylilies will not come true from seed! So many people still don't seem to be aware of that.

That gave me a flashback. In the late sixties there was a daylily enthusiast who showed her blossoms in shows, and came to region 12 meetings. I don't recall her given name, but she was the wife of a Tallahassee attorney, and I knew her as Mrs. J. Ritchie Rosa.

I remember hearing her say more than once: "Honey, when you cross crap with crap, you're going to get crap."
