Sandy, that was one of the few "Science Fiction / Military crossover" novels that really works well as science fiction. maybe it's not right to call it military fiction just because the protagonist is a classic warrior and addresses the issue of totally clueless civilians trying to survive a military situation.

Of course the first thing the civilians do is deny that the situation exists, and blame the military for frightening them! It takes a considerable body count and a bloody stand-up battle in the town square to convince them they should have listened sooner ...

You might enjoy reading about the Avalon ecology in the second novel, where they go to the mainland. I don;t thnik it was this novel that coined this phrase, but it applies:

Loosely remembered:

"Everything on the planet either cut you, poisoned you, paralyzed you, or ate your a$$ whole."

Maybe from the Deathworld trilogy? Harry Harrison .

Anyway, your Scorpion peppers would probably do well on either planet.

I got a new tablet for my birthday and lost the bookmark on this forum until today. I have some seeds from some very new hot peppers. They all look really nasty looking. Apocalypse Scorpion, another Chocolate Bhutlah from UK origins, and the very new CPR ( Chocolate Primo Reaper ) by Butch Taylor. Tom

Here are mine. I used to grow these in the garden but they got woody and senile. Then, somehow, the plants in the photo have come up under the front stairs.

Very beautiful to look at as one climbs. Recently, coming to get his payment, the lawnmower man grabbed one and ate it because he thought it was a capsicum. Bad thing to do.

It is a highly aromatic chili which some people like to use to make Balinese curries. I have hundreds but only use an average of two fruit a month: and still nearly die from them. This might not be because they are deadly hot but because I am of a sensitive and sweet character.

We still haven't seen anything lower than 42 so far this season so everything is still producing like crazy. I just put a new top on the greenhouse that holds most of the pepper plants. I have been selling peppers more on a hobby scale but since I have doubled the number of my production plants each year for the last 5 years and continue to sell everything I can produce, I am going to make it a go as the major part of my over all business. Cycads have been my main thing since 1998. I am getting ready to build another greenhouse just for growing peppers. It will be right beside the other one and eventually will be the exact same size. Here is a picture of the new top on #4 and you will see some pepper plants in the foreground. This is where the new greenhouse will be. Tom

Here is a picture of the pepper plants in #4. Most are producing peppers and the plants are up to 6 feet tall.

Here is a new, unique pepper. It is called the 7 pot bubblegum. They say it has a slight taste of bubblegum, but I don't taste that. It is a little sweeter than most of the other 7 pot peppers though. It is unique where the calyx stays on the pepper, where you don't see that in most other peppers. Also, the color of the pepper will bleed into the calyx, and also into the stem. This will vary on every pod, so it is fun to see how each pepper develops.

OMG, Tom -- how do you get in there to pick?

I can't imagine a 6-foot tall pepper plant -- mine get to around 3 feet and I think that's pretty amazing! How long does it take them to get that tall?

You are seeing the plants from the side. I put them in rows, but two pots side by side in each row to save space. Each row has a spacing of 3 1\2 feet between the edges of the pots, which as they get wider, I have a couple of feet to move in between. Ghost pepper plants can get that tall in one long season if you put them in a good sized pot, like a 7 gallon. Most take 2 years to get that tall. I still have some ghost pepper plants that are 5 years old now. Most of the plants in that picture are 3 years old.

Here is a new pepper this year. It is the BBM, which stands for big black momma. This was made by the same guy who made the 7 pot Primo. The genetics are very close to the chocolate Bhutlah I have been making a big deal about his year. The Bhutlah is a cross between the chocolate Bhut Jolokia ( ghost pepper) and the 7 pot Douglah. The BBM is a cross between the Naga Morich ( the dwarf ghost pepper) and the Douglah. As you can see how bumpy it is, it is as hot as it is bumpy. The taste is not s good as the bhutlah though. Some of the first pods were somewhat bitter tasting.
