drdawg said:While moving my orchids inside (mounted ones first and now the BS ones) I found a surprise sitting high up on a shelf in the oak trees. The is L. perrinii 'Big Buggah' AM/AOS (unless there's been a name change!) and this is the first time it has bloomed. Another plant is in bud, so I will at least have some color for a while. Hopefully, with this cool weather, the blooming time will be extended. It is fragrant too.

Wow that is nice! That is the kind of purple that I like. More purple, less fuschia.

Another bloom of Cochleanthes amazonica. 4 more buds to go! I hope they will all open at the same time.

Melissa, the grower's photo showed these flowers much more pink than what I see.

Thanks, Melissa. I have discovered that temperature can sure make a difference in coloration. It will be interesting to see if this next plant will be the same as the one in bloom.

Hi all, temps are to be a low of 45 degrees tonight here in Memphis. All my Catts are outside and Phrags, Den kingianum and my Mexie. Everything else is in my sister Cathy's greenhouse. I really think my big Bulldog Paph's could take one night at 45 but I already sent them over. This next week nights in the 50's, so no worry. I do have everything's that's still on the porch on rolling carts, so easy to just roll them in if needed.
I too fell for Ken's L perrinni, color is sparkling and enticing!

They should be fine outside, Roberta!

@Jim Hawk, I just learned today that my Habenaria rhodocheila should be labeled as Habenaria erichmichaelii, and yours is also Habenaria erichmichaelii. Erich Michael worked with Leon Glicenstein at Hoosier Orchids/Indianapolis and Leon knows the precise differences between the two Habenarias, he sees the slight difference in color and also lip shape. He mentioned that erichmichaelii should be fragrant. I have to check this out next year, I missed that since it was flowering outside and the scent may have been drowned out.

Ken, your L. perrinii 'Big Buggah' is now C. perrinii 'Big Buggah' but I love it anyway. Great color and the OrchidWiz photo pretty well matches yours.

Ursula, love your Vanda tessellate. As for the Habanaria name change, that was the only name tag in the OC I was sure of! Shrug! I'll put it on the ever growing list of necessary changes.

Melissa's Schombos arrived today in great shape and I couldn't be happier. Thanks, Melissa! Also, your Cochleanthes amazonica is a winner. Nice growing. By the way, OrchidWiz has it listed as Warczewiczella [W.] amazonica.

I pulled the trigger on a new truck yesterday so I'm looking good in my new ride. Hilarious! It has some fancy gadgets on it so I'm still in the learning mode. Everything I buy these days seems to be smarter than I am.

The Tampa Orchid Club's big Orchid Expo is at the USF Botanical Gardens this weekend and I am giving a one hour presentation at 2PM on Saturday. There will be AOS judging and several vendors. Elaine? Melanie? It has been a while since we have heard from Melanie. I hope she is OK.

Here are the latest pics from the OC:

L. anceps, var. Guerrero X C. Hausermann's Sensation 'Ernie', a first time bloomer for me.

Lots of lovelies there, Jim but HEY! Where's the picture of the new truck??

Ooh, I would love to get up there to see the Orchid Expo and hear your talk. But we are racing on Saturday afternoon, and with this perfect weather, I really can't weasel out of it.

We do need to make a plan for Apopka in November, though. You know you can "call" Melanie by putting in her handle like this:
@mellielong USF this weekend, and are you ok? We miss you.

Bee Yew Deey and I must say it looks kind of familiar . . . oh yeah, it might be related to the one out in our driveway!

Much more room in the backseat of that baby for your big orchids to go to be displayed.

It is a good idea to move your Orchids around every so often as they need room for growing spikes, or to enjoy a blooming Orchid without jumping through hoops/plants.
Smiling
I simply wanted to move the Schom superbiens to the front, since it is in spike and that prompted all sorts of switches and wouldn't you know it, this Lc Breen's Jenny Ann 'Cheng Min' FCC/AOS was flowering happily against the glass. ( or trying to find room to open)
I moved it to the front of the greenhouse and the gorgeous blooms are so nicely scented too, I love it.

Keeping fingers crossed for you, Jim! And I am partial to beautifully colored blooms with that lacquered look! Lovey dubby

Have fun car - shopping too, Roberta! Thumbs up

I busied myself today playing with different lenses. I have a Tamron lens which I am not fond of, and then there is my normal Nikon lens - part of the Nikon D 50, and then as comparison I used the IPad Air. All that to showcase a bunch of little birdies! Big Grin
My Ornithophora/Sigmatostalix radicans is now about half way open and this plant is fun. I never see a bug on it, it grows like crazy every Summer and blooms really well. What more could one want from an Orchid? And there is a lovely sweet honey scent.
This one likes warm temps, good light and LOTs of water.
The little blooms are numerous on those hundreds of spikes and the individual little birdies measure ca 1/4 inch. Btw this is supposed to be a miniature!! ( definition: miniature is < 6 inches) This monster, composed of tntc minis measures about 3 feet across.
First the Nikon camera:

And now the IPad camera for the fun of it.

I had bought the plant in September 2004 in Chicago at the Orchid Fest. Here it was a year later in 2005, planted then into a coconut shell. This Coconut shell is still inside of this plant clump and pretty much covered on all sides.
