Probably last pics for me this season. We are due to have 3 or 4 days of rain beginning tomorrow.Thumb of 2011-05-19/Oldgardenrose/c83189

First one no true id. Second one my new 'Chestine Gowdy'. Third one is an amazingly rugged 'Spoon' peony. Impervious to cold, heat, rain and snow.

I usually cut all the buds except for one terminal bud so the bloom season does not last very long. Some are first year blooms with only one per plant. The reds are fading fast and will be deadheaded before the seed pods form.

This pic is an older, established peony which never bloomed and the buds stayed dime-sized or smaller. Possibly was hit with one of our late freezes but none of the others had the problem. I have three more younger divisions so I will dig this one in the fall and try to determine if it is salvageable.Thumb of 2011-05-20/Oldgardenrose/4fbc9b

Finally starting here now, with, of course, rain expected.

We'll start off with 'Erza Pound', a tree peony.

My favorite tree peonies are the ones that are either layered in pink or white with the purple flares. Here's another one I've had for years. I moved it once and now it's next to the house

I always worry about the basketball hitting that guy too. 9 blossoms on it this year, right next to our front door and just off the driveway basketball court. I need to create a wall somehow. Too many near misses...

I always start hoops practices with a chat with the basketball, "hit the roses, not the peony!"
