I usually cut all the buds except for one terminal bud so the bloom season does not last very long. Some are first year blooms with only one per plant. The reds are fading fast and will be deadheaded before the seed pods form.
This pic is an older, established peony which never bloomed and the buds stayed dime-sized or smaller. Possibly was hit with one of our late freezes but none of the others had the problem. I have three more younger divisions so I will dig this one in the fall and try to determine if it is salvageable.
