There are way, way too many clematis that I must put on my wish list!
I just rescued another Jackmanii S. Whistling There were about a dozen that were dried up Angry I told them they needed water last time I was there but they weren't. Poor things Sad

I doubt you could mulch any clematis "too much". Water well, then put down more mulch - an entire bag of the long pine needles would be heaven for the clem's.

Arlene, that was one of my questions in another forum. Does pine needles put off acid and is it good for all mulching. I was concerned about it killing my plants that do not like acid.

I have lots of buds coming on. I should be seeing some blooms by a week or 2.

It's perfectly safe. Once the needles are dead they are not acidic. It's been said many times but so many people believe they are acidic - not true.

Neither is it true that coffee grounds are acidic. I have tested them time and again and they're fine for conditioning soil or for compost.

Oh Debra, that Florida is amazing. It is consistently beautiful because I remembered it last year too. Green Grin!
Stefan, I am curious about your statement that you earned all those clematis. Nice collection

It is reliable. I can cut it back 3 -4 x in a season and get blooms

Some of the clematis are doing great. Unfortunately I lost my Will Goodwin. It put on a bloom at the beginning of March and now the leaves are brown and the plant is dried up. Confused I don't know what has happened.

Here are a few photos of what is blooming.

Those whorls are always a delight. Your clem's look great.

Sorry to hear about Will. You can cut him back to ground level and give him his own gallon of lukewarm water with a tablespoon of Epsom Salt diluted in it. He should perk up again. Add lots of mulch to keep his roots cool.

Need some advice. I bought Jackmani Superba two years ago because I wanted something that would really take off. Later I heard that it really could be a problem so I am wondering if I should scrap it and start over. This is its third spring and it still only has 1 main stem.

I want a nice purple so what would you all recommend??

Don't ditch it unless you don't like it. Did you prune it down to 8 - 12" from the ground, to a set of buds, in late winter? If not, do it, give it a drink of Epsom Salt water and watch it grow.

Thanks Arlene, I was thinking of using the needles because they are lighter in weight. Hauling those bags of mulch and lifting them to dump is getting hard to do.

I totally agree. Lugging the huge bags (as I've been doing for weeks) is absolutely exhausting.

Thanks, Arlene. It only has one little stem, but I chopped it off and today it gets the Epsom salts so we will see.

Karen - If you watch it very closely nothing will happen. It seems, when we ignore it, the plant will grow.
