I found a great website for some of the historic irises, as well as moderns. It belongs to Iris Paradise aka Brennet Iris Garden in Germany. They have a fantastic collection of photos of Historic and Modern irises including MDBs, SDBs, IBs, BBs, TBs, ABs, Species Iris, LAs...and I'm not sure what else. They have special listings of the irises of Cayeaux, Bianco, and Schreiner too.

If you go to the home page and then click on "Our Collection" on the left menu bar it will take you to a site for all their photos. They have over 6000!!! I spent some time poking around the historic iris page trying to identify some of the Noids that were posted today.
http://www.irisparadise.com/Ir...

We all know you can't identify an iris by a photo alone...but a photo can give you a starting place to begin your research. These are the notes I made during my 'playtime'. I hope some of them turn out to be valid leads for you:

These are from the historic listings...I didn't get to the modern ones.

Rob
# 13 Gilvey, Terada, 1960 (Except that this one is not in the AIS or ATP databases...?)
# 16 Mary Mc Clellan Tim Craig, 1952 (listed 50" tall ?)
# 10 White Tower, Robert Schreiner, 1951, or
Winter Carnival, Robert Schreiner, 1940, or
Queen Ann, J. Robinson, 1955

Arlyn
# 9 Crispette, Robert Schreiner, 1954
# 8 New Snow, R. Fay, 1946
# 7 Eleanor's Pride, Edward Watkins, 1956

Tom (in the process I ran into this one...but the pictures are from other sites)
If # 3 is the right height to be an IB check Fantastic Blue

I forgot to mention, one of the nice things about the way they have the photos organized is that they are listed chronologically by year so you can scan easily the photos in the time period you are interested in. I found it much easier to scan for possible identification because of this.

It's also great for observing the progression of the for, colors, and patterns of the irises (we all know who likes to do that! Big Grin ).

It's a great site. I found it about a year ago when I was trying to identify some of my historics. I like that you can search by hybridizer as well.

Tom, I think your #6 that your Mom got from a neighbor may be much older than you are thinking. Take a look at the listings for Pink Opal, Jacob Sass, 1934:

What I mentioned earlier about seeing traits come into play at various times is very apparent looking at that chronological listing. In 1950, big blooms were suddenly everywhere!

Ok...here is one more installment...then I'm calling it a night (I love a challenge or a puzzle...but enough is enough! Sticking tongue out )

Rob
#9 Possibly Distant Fire, Schreiner, 1983

Neal
Check third Noid - possibly Princess Osra, Bliss, 1921
….alternate, less likely Liberty Bell, Donahue, 1930

Tom,
For your first Noid, the blue violet bi-color with the white rim on the falls:
Iwein, Goos & Koenemann, 1926 (not listed in AIS or ATP databases so might need further research)

Sherry

From a rose grower’s grandmother….Pale yellow
Moonlight Madonna, Jacob Sass, 1943 (but conflicting photos at: http://wiki.irises.org/bin/vie... …they look like Ola Kala, also by Sass)

And…on your ‘cast iron' Blue…check Andalusian Blue, Robert Schreiner, 1938, (page 13)
http://wiki.irises.org/bin/vie...

Debra

Pale Yellow historic, there when you bought the house…appears the same as Sherry’s
Moonlight Madonna, Jacob Sass, 1943 (but conflicting photos at: http://wiki.irises.org/bin/vie... …they look like Ola Kala, also by Sass)

Bonnie, If the Blue/Violet one with the white beard is an IB it may be Fritjof, Goos & Koenemann, 1910

Have fun checking these out!! Big Grin

I wonder if my Noid yellow could be Moon's Delight from Hager, 1984? I don't know how to move my earlier pic from above for easier comparison.

Here is our database pic:

I compared all the pics in the Iris Wiki too. It has the same lacing, and a white spot on the falls. It looks like a few vendors used to carry it, I wonder if Blue J or C & T might still have it to get a comparison.

They do look very much alike. Enough so to go buy "Moon's Delight" to plant next to your Yellow NoID to test it with.

I don't think I mentioned Nancy @bloomers, I love the bronze Noid you posted. I especially like the photo with the fence in the background, it really shows off the color! If you ever have too many of them, even without a name, that is one I would love to have...so maybe we could do a trade sometime! Big Grin
