Ashton & Terry - Can't wait to see some of yours, too! Thanks for the heads up of a possible prolif where that odd bud has formed! That would be awesome to get a prolif of this newest bloomer!

DancingGenes - Love your screen name! Can't wait to see your first blooms on Gracious Living! Is it the actual named plant or seedlings from Gracious Living?

Vickie - I really love the 2 seedlings from the Laura Mast x Dragonfly Dawn crosses. Both are something that I might name and register. I think my family would love to receive either one of those as special "in memory of" gifts!

The newest bloomer from the "Through the Looking Glass x unknown" is worth crossing with others because of it's bloom size. I hope the eye becomes bigger! Love, love, love that big 7" bloom! A real show-off! Thumbs up

Becky I just love those seedlings. I am not a huge fan of doubles but yours is stunning, very neat and beautifully patterned.

I have scapes on Just My Size and Higher Ambition. I am worried that they will not survive as it is far earlier than usual to have the first scapes on anything (except Alpine Mist in its first year and that scape withered).

Most of my seedlings survived the winter weather and (so far) slugs and snails. I have 36 seedlings in the greenhouse ready to plant out as soon as I'm sure the frosts are over. I hope the planted-out seedlings will produce some 'keepers' this year, last year's crop only produced one which I named Joan Clements after my Mum and it was a stunner. In fact I think I'm going to change my avatar to this one.

The blooms are around 9", this is the first scape. I can't wait to see what it does this year. It's a cross Green Tarantula x Frilly Bliss, seeds bought on the LA

New bloom on another seedling. This one is not quite as unusual as I was hoping it would be:

First bloom on seedling "Laughing Clown x Instant Graffiti". A year and 3 months old. (Seeds from Daredevil on the LA.) 23" tall scape, 5" bloom. Has 12 buds on it.

I couldn't see the yellow pattern on the inner parts of the petals of this daylily until the sun was no longer shining brightly on it. I see a resemblance to it's parents! I wonder if more of a pattern will show up as more buds bloom?

I went back and searched my old emails for more information on the pollen parent of this cross to find out what it is.

CWLWHYOG = [(CHIN WHISKERS x LITTLE WITCHING HOUR) X TOMORROW'S SONG].

This is what Linda Michaels wrote me about her hybrid. I don't know if she ever registered it.:

CWLWHTOG-2 (unregistered) M 35" DOR 7" (sometimes recurved to 5") this rose
purple with darker eye outlined in pale pink has lighter tepal edges and was
moved to the selected bed in August, 2011. Of primary importance to me is
that it maintained its color pattern during the 2 hottest summers we've
experienced, unlike most patterned cultivars I grow, though I'd still
classify it as a cold dominant pattern. Nearly every bloom had comparable
patterning in our cooler 2013. With stout scapes with 2 laterals and up to
30 buds, it has rebloomed for the past 3 years, producing 3 sets of scapes
in 2013. A true game changer for me, every diploid seedling I selected in
2013 was patterned and the majority came from this seedling. Passes
patterns, good scapes and rebloom to many of its kids. Influencing both
etched eyes and dollop-of-color patterns, it is very pod fertile and has
strong pollen, too. My only regret is that it's so fat, but I've selected
some thrillingly skinny near-spiders as well as quite round from its pollen.

Yes, it looks like she did. It is described here: http://www.daredevildaylily.co...

Its registered cultivar name is 'Instant Graffiti'.

I have read that the first blooms of seedlings are not "true" and one must wait until the second year of blooms to see what the "true" bloom is. Have you found that to be true?

I have found that to be true. Even named daylilies sometimes take 3 years to really show their true colors in my zone.

I haven't had enough seedlings bloom for 3 years in a row yet to know if that is true or not. I would LOVE to see a few photos of seedling blooms during year 1, year 2, and year 3! Anyone want to share some photos with all of us?

Wow Cynthia, I totally did not expect that! Confused We're in close to the same zone so I guess I'll just have to see what happens when I get my new daylilies this spring. I wasn't really expecting blooms much at all first year, but did not think I'd have to wait longer to get true blooms. c'est la vie

I have roughly four scapes growing in different seedling beds, but there's one that's a cross between two of Nicole's unregistered seedlings. She is going to be the first bloom of the nursery. The second picture is of one of the first daylily seedlings I received from a hyrbidizer in GA. Unfortunately, it was a LT seedling.

Dennis 616, I think you misread what I meant. I didn't mean that they took 3 years to bloom but that it may take them awhile to settle in to be able to perform to their potential. Usually Evergreens and Semi-evergreens need some time. Every plant is different though so I certainly cannot say it is true of every one. Some new ones I plant seem to settle in very quickly and not mind being disturbed but others may not be as quick to respond to their new home.

Cindy you are so right. Your Genesta should take off this year. I got mine as a single fan and within a couple years I had close to twenty. I am looking forward to her putting out over a hundred plus blooms on one scape in your garden this late blooming season. She was not happy being divided last year but she will hit her stride this year.

You sent me Genesta and the Darryl Apps one (can't think of its name offhand) but the Darryl Apps one settled in much quicker than Genesta did.
