Annette, you had such beautiful gardens, I'm so jealous. My itoh is too young to bloom yet, been in Maryland everything is so much behind, the itoh peony normally bloom in late June here.well , I can enjoy your now, thank you for sharing!
Finally, bloom season has begun for peony in my garden. The first to bloom is the double fernleaf peony! Some blooms open today! This peony was purchased from Fina Gardens last fall. They sent great root.
Sarah Bernhardt is about to bloom, right next to Walter Faxon. I think SB has the prettiest buds, just before it blooms.
Love the Bartzella and clematis combo, Annette! What is the name of your clematis? Sarah Barnhardt has such a lovely pink color. These are my favorites of your group of blooms today.
Kousa, your fern leaf peony looks great, i don't have any fern leaf yet.
I don't do anything special to my TP, they either liked the soil in my yard, or must be the Chinese thing. LOL
Karen, I'm so glad you're finally getting blooms your fernleaf is so beautiful!
Yan, again, your tree peony blooms are over the top amazing! I wish I could grow them like you do, you've got to have a secret for getting them to grow and bloom so beautifully!
Jasmin said:Yan, your TPs are lovely. Do you fertilize them?
Yes, I do fertilize them in the early spring as soon as the soil is workable, and do it again in late fall to early winter.
I loved the Bayer Advanced All-In-One Rose and Flower Care( Concentrate ) for all my TP & Peony. We had Botrytis
really bad in this area, It seems did its job pretty good for my TP.
The fern leaf looks like the true species type, judging by the extra fine leaves. You really got a bargain with having those flowers the first year. Sometimes they bloom extra well the first year then not so well the second year. It has to do with the storage roots feeding the eyes the first year but are not replenished sufficiently for good growth the second year.
Thank you, Jerry. Fina sent me a nice healthy root. I hope that it won't go into a decline next year; at least it will give me some blooms. Something new that I try this year which I think helps the peonies alot is watering. Alot of places say that we should not water peonies but I think that it is necessary to water the peonies while they are in bud stage as well as flowering stage not only to preserve the flowers to last longer but to insure the the plants have enough moisture to maintain their growths. Just because they are drought resistant plants does not mean that they don't need water. I water the new plants 3 times a week if it does not rain.
The only thing I have read in many places is do not water the fern leafs after they become dormant and the tops die. It can cause major root rot. Let Mother Nature handle the watering during the Fall.
Watering is not an issue here in CO right now! It's rained off and on for the last week and is expected to continue for the next 7-10 days. Just need a sunny day for the buds to start opening. The first of my fernleafs is ready to pop and Nosegay is showing quite a bit of color on the bud....
