Looks like everybody has a white noid ! Several posted here, I have three, or four, one posted on the data base thread.........anyway, I'm beginning to question the 'accuracy" of some of the entries on the various "PBF Lists"....I understand that it is a transient thing....some show early, some late, some all season, and it's affected by both culture, as well as climate. But I wonder if some of those 'entries" aren't "honest mistakes'...example...."A" *thinks* he sees it on an iris, and enters it on one of the lists.....but his iris ID is wrong, and it's not really the iris he thinks it is!, Then ,"B" sees it on the list, and, to be helpful, adds it to ANOTHER list, because" We want to compile a COMPLETE listing", then "C" comes along, and using the PBF lists to help confirm an ID, decides ," I must not have the correct iris, mine doesn't have PBF!". PBF, IMHO, is only a part of the ID process, and really only useful if BOTH iris are grown in the same place, in the same dirt, and "evaluated' by the same set of eyes. I tip my hat to you.

Here are two of my NOID irises I inherited when I bought this house:

The yellow one is gorgeous, but I have no clue what it is. I suspect they came from Breck's because I have a 90YO neighbor who said
she and the lady who owned my house used to order from them.

Angie, the first one might be Joyce Terry. It was introduced in 1974 and seems to be common. Here is mine:

Angie, your Noid's are lovely.. The bottom one looks familiar... I'll keep it in mind as I'm searching for a name for my white one.

Arlyn, I agree that the PBF list may not be completely accurate, but it is a good tool to use... I've also eliminated Purissima as a possibility because it has haft lines, and the one I have doesn't.. I'm looking at 'Matterhorn' as a possibility.. but still researching...

I understand "still searching " ! Sticking tongue out I don't know, if I ever could put names to all my NOIDS, if I would feel "elated" at the prospect of being "done " with the search....or disappointed that the hunt was over, and go looking for more NOIDS !
Your white does look sort of "Sass-y" in the falls, but, somehow, the Sass whites look 'cleaner" than your noid...if you understand what I'm trying to say.......they seem a 'brighter " white.

With help from Tom, we've decided this is Thornbird w/o the thorn, but
spoons instead! Thumbs up

(there was a tag near it that said Thornbird, but the lack of a thorn kind of threw me!
The database says thorns or spoons - mine got spoons.)

I like that one too Jan! Thumbs up

I'm noticing I have more varieties of NoIDs then I thought. I will just enjoy them for what they are, beautiful flowers that give my enjoyment. I do keep all of my named irises seperated from the NoIDs. The NoIDs go up on the hill, while the named go into beds in my field.

Sherry, I have hundreds of agaves and a few scars from them. I have a couple that are about to bloom. Which sucks, because then I have to get torn up digging the dead ones out.

Jan -Bonnie just posted some pics of her Thornbird, and one of them had horns and the other plant had spoons, so I guess it has that ability.

yes, Thornbird that blooms on one side of the garden has spoons and the other clump has horns.

Here is a really strange burgundy or chocolate? Started out with black buds, green at the base and now this really dark burgundy with black. Purchased from a lady up the street who was thinning out her irises, for 25 cents. I think I will have two, I probably divided a clump.
Thumb of 2015-04-24/dragonfetti/405f88
Also a light blue that I received in September from another friend. She has given me irises before and these will get about 30 inches tall.

Thumb of 2015-04-24/dragonfetti/ac3f34

And here is the bloom from a bud I posted on the "I have buds" forum. I already have this one that I purchased at a rummage sale a few years ago. It increases very quickly. This stalk had five buds.

I have probably 30 or more NOIDS that I purchased in the last few months. It's like playing no peek poker, you don't know if you are going to win or lose. But I like them all some just more than others!

I think it's because they are unknown. I collect those things no one else wants and it's not always a good thing, but in plants it has always worked out. Smiling

If anyone would like some more NoIDs in their garden, let me know. Just pay for shipping.

I'll post some pictures of them later and of the ones I'm going to divide this year. Plus there will be some mystery ones that will be dug up that haven't bloomed for awhile and have been in place for over 20 years.

lovemyhouse said:Thought this one might be Copper Classic (based on purchase records), but I am now mostly sure this one is Terra Rosa. Not sure enough to put the photographs in the database(!), just 99.9999% sure enough for my plant list. Hilarious!

Unless you are the hybridizer with impecable records, how can you ever be 100% sure? Even if you get it from the hybridizer you can't be 100% sure. Throw in variations due to culture, climate and soil and it gets really tough.
Even if you grow it next to a "known" plant and it's an exact match, all you really know is that they are an exact match.

99.9999% is pretty sure. For me, Terra Rosa is the one.
