Nope. I don't have that one.

Northern roses have just started. When I see all those roses in California and warmer places, I feel like a poor cousin. Sighing!

Jasmin ...

That's a beautiful photo. Looks like you haven't been cursed with rose curculios which I have heard can be a problem in Canada.

I am still dis-budding my roses for another two weeks. The roses are pushing foliage and buds, but I can't allow them to bloom.

Smiles,
Lyn

Jasmin: My roses are a pitiful mess with RUST right now. 90% are covered in it...so don't think all Calif. roses are glorious ! LOL
It's been horribly humid here, hot, and NO breeze...prime rust conditions. I've never had it this bad. Sighing!

Usually, yes. But, this years weather has been so completely crazy I have no clue what the rest of the summer will be like.
The thought of having to go out and hand pick every single leaf off the roses is killing me !
Since we really didn't have a "winter" this year, everything is out of whack in the garden. The roses were only "dormant" for less than 3 weeks. I did my usual pruning on New Years Day and three weeks later they were sprouting. They just didn't get the rest they need. They were in glorious full bloom in March. Now: Nothing but rust. They've done absolutely nothing for 3 months. SO discouraging.
Add to that the watering restrictions here. NOT at pretty picture at all.

I am curious about the rust issue. We always have hot, humid summers, often with no wind, and I have never seen rust on anything. What is the difference?

I wish I knew.
Probably the fact that I'm four blocks from the ocean and the dew is very heavy in the morning lately and the foliage stays wet for hours on end, there's no breeze and my garden is very walled in.
Add to that the fact that I have TOO MANY plants crowded together in and amongst my roses. This was never an issue until this year.
The recent weather here reminds me of Florida.

I also have lots of rust on my roses this year. It's the first time it's been this bad, and I haven't quite pinned down the cause. In the past, it would show up on one or two OGR's scattered around the garden, and I just assumed they had no disease resistance. This year it's on a lot of modern roses that have never exhibited it before. Some of them are in crowded beds, but others aren't, so crowding doesn't seem to be the issue here. Humidity isn't the issue here either. The only thing different about this year is the combination of the ongoing drought and the lack of frost this past winter. Maybe that produced the ideal breeding ground for rust, but I'm not sure. I'm stumped.

I have some unusual occurrences this year too--like powdery mildew on some roses which is really weird for me--I don't know if I have "rust". What is it and what does it look like?

Mike ...

When I lived in San Diego, I stopped deadheading in October to let the roses finish their cycle of bloom-to-hips. Even, if the roses didn't create hips, because some don't, they did slow down producing blooms and that gave them a longer "rest" before I pruned in late December.

I still stop deadheading in October up here, but for a different reason. I want the plants to harden off before winter hits.

Smiles,
Lyn

Just the usual black spot on mostly my yellow roses, no rust on them that I saw but I have rust on several daylilies and I think it's due to the damper cooler weather and morning dew.

Here's a good picture of rust, DD.

http://www.gardenersworld.com/...

It looks a lot like the beginning of black spot, but there are also fuzzy orange patches on the undersides of the leaves.

Do we have morning dew, Sue? I've never seen it (but I haven't seen morning anything for years). Big Grin

Yesterday and today I have been cutting bouquets off my Lavaglut Floribundas for Bouquets. So far have cut 6 huge bougquets and given them all away to friends.

I gave those roses in the picture from the other day to my friend and she made 3 lovely bouquets out of them for her house.

Lyz, I am no aware or rose curculious. Never noticed them here. They are similar to Lilly beatles that I noticed last year. I don't have lillies, but I have Solomon's Seal and False Solomon's Seal; both from the Lilly family. The bitters hado been eating them. I haven't seen them this year.
