Chiltern is quite reputable. That was a good choice. Thumbs up

No. Two bulbs from Faraway Flowers in 2011, steadily increasing year to year. I do have some coming from seed, but there are not nearly as nice as yours!

This is the most common type, and for the first few seasons the flower were extra small. There is another form with flowers 50% larger with correspondingly longer pedicels. Foliage is scrumptious. I had gotten it direct from China, and I grew it about 15 years ago and lost it after many years. Scanned film photos of it:

Love Edelweiss. Usually, even the "red" ones don't come that red. Consider yourself privileged!

lilium duchartrei is the one species I have always wanted to grow @lefty . Is it a tough one to grow? It seems like it is always "sold out" when I find it too.

It is L. michiganense time here in Michigan. I went on a few drives to look for wild stands of this lily. 2 weeks ago we had massive rains and one of the worst floods on record and I found several groups of this lily that during the flood would have been completely under water (above the highest buds).

These stems were 3' to 4' tall and you can see the dirty leaves in the background left behind as the muddy water receded.

I went back to a spot where there was a really nice stand of early redder ones and there was one puny stem that was all distorted so no need to show that one.

I found a new location with some redder colored flowers:

Here is a picture showing the typical location I find them when driving in the county - they are in a ditch were there is some water in the spring - often growing in grasses & ferns and sometimes cattails.

Thumb of 2017-07-11/auratum/8713cf

A few more random pics of ones I found:

Timing is everything. If you go looking too early or too late you can drive right by a big group of stems and never see them in the grasses. Here is a stem that is just starting to get color on the buds - almost missed this one. I know there are more that I drove by but did not see them as it is a little early for some locations. This one is right next to a "Rail Trail".

If I had more time I would walk more trails and even kayak the rivers in this area to look for other groups but that will not happen. I hope you enjoy these photos.

In Minnesota, our L. michiganense have racemes that always look like umbels. Many years ago when Darm showed pics of his on the Yahoo group with the same form as yours, Patrick, I questioned him about it. Others in the discussion had only seen the umbel form also. Darm's answer was that his seed source was reputable (I don't remember if it was actually wild seed or not). Now finally see where the racemous form comes from! Is this inflorescence form everywhere in your region?

Rick - to me this is still an umbel format and not atypical for my area. The bottom group of pedicels always comes off from the same point (by definition umbel). Above this lower umbel the pedicels do all sorts of different things like stagger arrangement or a second umbel. To me this is no different than say L. regale which makes an umbel at the lowest group and has varying patterns above this. Maybe I am missing something here? In my understanding, for it to be a raceme format the pedicels need to come off the main stem at various levels and no two from the same place on the stem but maybe my understanding of a raceme inflorescence is overly strict?

Rick - I found a stem today that showed a raceme inflorescence. This is the only one I have seen that I would call a true raceme - others are more of a mix or straight umbel. The flowers also don't look like they fully recurve - almost half way between canadense & michiganense. I have seen many that recurve this amount that otherwise to me look like normal michiganense so I don't think this is a hybrid - just variation in the species. The tepals on this and some others near by were also more narrow and the spotting less.
