I know what you're talking about when you say yellow-tan with L. michiganense. We can have hints of that here, too, although I don't find it very attractive. As you go into northern Minnesota, you find the color ranging into a florescent pink.

Those are so lovely, Rick. The two-tiered ones are quite impressive! Did Darm have any comment on your umbel forms?

I don't think Darm is used to speaking engagements. (Who would be, living where he does?) While it was clear he knew what he was talking about, you could tell there were a thousand things going on in his mind as he spoke. The unfamiliarity of it all and a brand new scenario can become taxing, to say the least. He didn't really say anything more about the raceme vs. umbel thing, and everyone was so eager to hear everything he did have to say, I don't think anyone cared or even noticed.

He didn't make it out to my garden Sad , but mine is the farthest away from the hotel of the nine on the self-guided garden tour list. (The bus tour was the day before.) I don't know how he was getting around, if he even had a car, since he flew down from the Northwest Territories. After all was said and done, it was suggested in the future that we have a buddy system for self-guided garden touring, where touring locals might invite non-locals to ride along with. It's such a logical, kind and thoughtful thing to do that I don't know why no one has instigated such a program before....!

If I had been there I would have been a bit mesmerized myself. I really consider him an expert and have followed his posts on Yahoo Group since I joined NALS in 2000. I have also printed out many of his posts, they are so informative.

I agree with the buddy system method. It can be intimidating trying to find one's way around in a strange place. The next convention host will hopefully take notice.

Rick--are yours located on the north side of your house? They seem to be doing very well there without any support at all. Good looking plants!!

The full plant pic of Lilium michiganense is on the north side of my house. Lots of open shade (no trees), and at this time of year they do get sun late in the day. I also have michiganense growing in a mostly sun garden and on the east side of the house. Never had one with even a weakish stem. Most of the other lilies in that same bed lean out toward stronger light, but L. michiganense stands tall.

I'm so excited! A different plant (than last year) of Lilium canadense I grew from Neal's ( @gemini_sage ) wild collected seed in Kentucky is blooming. With the large spotting, it is one of the most coveted forms of the species, and I can't stop grinning. nodding The inflorescence structure is a little weird, and I attribute that more to my growing conditions, than the plant. All my Lilium canadense plants are "afflicted" with chlorosis caused by a higher soil pH than preferred, and the lack of micronutrient uptake has been exasperated by the abnormally high rainfall all season.

A surprise, as I had expected another year of growth before blooming. From seed collected on Sakhalin Island, Russia:

Lilium dauricum

Thumb of 2015-06-05/Leftwood/aedd87 Thumb of 2015-06-05/Leftwood/9f5881

It has taken over the spot for my earliest blooming lily, by far. Next up will be Lilium monadelphum

Yes, the second year of growth for L. dauricum, although the seed didn't come up until the second season.

The monadelphum seed were started in December 2010 (inside), and I pushed the late planting to gain a year. They bloomed last year also, so it took about 4 years for them. But my first go around with szovitsianum took two years longer; the stem was much larger when it began to bloom.

Been told that this isn't what I listed. All I know it grew from seeds.

Beautiful Lilium, Michael. Does each stem bear a single flower, or is it because these are new bulbs?

As far as I know, there was only one bulb in the container.
