I just wanted to say that my new profile pic is Mom and I. We are on a pontoon ride on Rough River Lake.
As many may know I live with my Mom half of the week. She will be 89 on Oct 1st.

Some of my earliest memories of Mom are her gardening. She had 2 large veggie gardens and also many flowers. Roses and iris, rows of zinna, ect that she loved. Now she isn't able to do as much but she still has a beautiful porch full of annuals that she babies.

I am redoing some of her old flower beds slowly. It is a labor of love, because she gets such enjoyment from seeing the blooms. I have planted several iris from Tom by her garage and will post pics next yr.
When did your love for gardening begin?

That is a wonderful photo and story, Teresa. I think I recently posted about when my love of irises began during iris week...... I think the thread was 'when did you fall in love?' by muddymitts. I wish I had more photos of our gardens and working in them as a child. A garden was such a common thing to have that it would have seemed odd to take a photo of it.

I think many of our gardening love was handed down. My Mom had peonies & ferns in her childhood garden in Omaha, so we had them in Milwaukee. Our back neighbor had a small yard but it was full of iris which began my love of those, although we also have peonies & ferns. The ferns are sort of accidental here. I admired the lilies of the valley in my Mom's fern bed so we have them here & they were my wedding bouquet 57 years ago. Dad was really a veg. garden person.

How fortunate you folks are to have had a gardening mom. My mother passed away, at 98, in our home last December. She wasn't much
into gardening, although I dimly remember a Victory garden during WWII. However, she was a very talented pianist, and when she was in her earlier nineties, I can remember working in the garden on a summer day, and having the sounds of her music wafting over the flower beds. I'll never forget the beauty of the moment.

Thanks for sharing your childhood memories with me. I didn't mention Dad above but he was such a great impact on my life. He passed away 3 yrs ago at the age of 90. He was a farmer and loved growing things. We had crops of course, corn and soybeans but he always helped with the big veggie gardens. One of his favorite plants at the house was a big pot of coleus we had every year. We still plant that in the Spring.

Thanks for sharing, Teresa. I love the picture of your Mom on the porch tending her pots. No doubt the Coleus is in your Father's memory. Her love of gardening shows in the beauty of the plants she grows.

My maternal Grandmother used to always have a pocket full of seeds in her apron. She was trying to breed the first double Gerbera back in the 50's.. She had flats and flats of seedlings in her garage (as well as chickens). She grew many fruit trees and so much that I've forgotten no doubt. But I do remember the beds of Gerbera and the tree roses lining the front walk.

Teresa:: What a wonderful story. I wish my Mom was still around, and my Dad too. My Mom loved her Iris and her peonies. In my previous home, I made a point of planting a peony bush in her honor, and would always think of her each Memorial Day when they bloomed. Now I am going
to re-create her Iris garden. I know that when they are in bloom, I will smile and think of my Mom.
Thank you for sharing your story about you and your Mom. She looks wonderful !

My maternal grandmother always had a large garden when I was a child. I honestly do not know if she 'loved' gardening or simply saw it as a source of food and revenue in a tiny rural town in the mountains in southern Idaho. My grandmother is with the shovel, my mom helping, and me in the red striped shirt, actually working.

To the right of this pic to the road, she had what seemed like a vast flower garden that I loved to wander through, inhaling every luscious scent and delicately touching each gossamer petal. To the right of the house she had a vegetable garden rimmed with currants and berries that must have been at least a half acre or more. Her iris rimmed the huge lawn she had in front of the house. She shared buying iris with her sister because neither of them could afford the price in the 40's, probably 25-50 cents a rhizome. Behind the house she had a raspberry patch. I still remember watching her pick berries, me in the shade of a tree munching delightedly on the boxed berries and her attired in a faded house dress, her worn-down heels dusty, her thick tan cotton stocking piled at her ankles, and her grey head covered in a dilapidated straw hat while she worked the rows, diligently testing every berry for ripeness, looking up now and then to check on her grandchildren. She never said a word to me or my berry hungry siblings, but later I learned she sold those berries along with other produce to provide revenue for her and my grandfather. My mother always gardened wherever we lived, and apparently, I was less than willing to help unless it was with the watermelons I grew in Sacramento, Ca in the 60's. When she saw my first garden, she looked at me and said, "I never would have guessed you would know how to do this." I guess she did not consider either her example or her instilling the love of a library with books on gardening in me.

I will be at Rough River Lodge Sept. 18/19 for a meeting. It must be near you.

My love of gardening came from both parents. My dad always had a huge vegetable garden and my mom was a flower gardener and member of a garden club. She always had huge white irises and then a rainbow of other colors in spots all over the yard no matter where we lived. I have a few cultivars from her yard and miss sharing flowers and gardening tips with her since she has been gone for 20 years, way to soon. None of my siblings got the gardening bug but now that I am retired, I can spend more time amid the flowers.
Somewhere I have a picture of my daughter in front of the huge white irises.

Yes, it is fairly close about 50 mi away. We went on the Lady of the Lake tour about a month ago. It is only $10 for about an hour and half tour of the lake. I think it stops this weekend tho. The captain had several stories as you go so it keeps it interesting.

I will be in Paducah then. Do you come often?

My mom had one Peace rose in memory of my grandfather - she took it from his house when they sold it. In the house, she had a philodendron and an African violet. My dad planted veggies sometimes, but we were gone all summer, so we just got whatever grew in the weeds when we got home. Rolling on the floor laughing

My father's mother was a gardener. She planted 100 olive trees in Greece and veggies and flowers in America.

My mother's father and his mother were gardeners. My great grandmother took all the Department of Agriculture courses on gardening that her local extension service offered. She died in her 80's riddled with cancer from using heaps of DDT.

I must come by gardening from the grands and greats. My grandfather was 59 when I was born. He wasn't doing a big veggie garden like he had during WWll, but he planted annuals and tomatoes every year that were purchased in flats that would be dunked in a pail of water to give a drink to before they got planted.

A 100 trees! I really wished I had planted more trees when I was younger. We planted 2 maples, 30 yrs ago when we bought this house. Now they are nice shade trees.

I asked my second cousin if the trees were still there. He doesn't think so.
