Do you know Paul Limmer? He used to have a Hummer. I don't know if he still does. I remember stories of him using it at either a summer meeting or a regional to drive people out of flooded areas. I guess he was driving through 4 foot deep water? Something like that. Not sure where on Long Island he lives... Great guy, I do know that.

I had daylilies in full scape when a hurricane went through here. We had a day of terrible rain, and well over 100 mph wind gusts, with hours of sustained winds of over 75-80 mph. It was maybe 5 years ago. Never seen the likes here in Ohio. The flowers for that day were trashed, but the next day, or maybe it was the day after that, the daylilies opened like nothing had happened. The only scapes that had problems were at my friends down the road... They were loaded with pods and were to heavy. Some of them went to the ground. It was in the late season. Don't know if it would have been so lucky if it would have been in early or mid season.

Yes, I do know Paul. He is a member of our local Long Island Daylily Society. Lots of us in that club and since Long Island is not that big, all somewhat close to each other.

I didn't take any pictures today. Obviously not getting any pics tomorrow. Honestly, I have no idea what to expect from the daylilies after Irene passes. I am just hoping for no damage, no trees down in my or my neighbors property and power to stay on as long as possible and come back on quickly. I will loose power for sure.

I have all my outdoor furnature put away which I did yesterday. The news has been on the TV all day but nothing much is new so far. The eye looks to be coming to go directly over us here in my area of Long Island.

I can't believe the amount of rainfall everyone seems to be getting! I guess they sometimes deliberately turn the power off before a hurricane, and I'll bet you're well prepared for a power loss since you seem so organized. When my sister lived in Tampa she would toss all her patio furniture in the swimming pool when a hurricane passed by, and she said the pool chlorine would make it look really pretty when she pulled it out later!

Would be nice if some of that rain could be redirected to Texas. In dire need all over the state, here. Sad

Hi Betty, well, no pool to toss the patio furnature into it had to go into the garage. No, I actually am NOT well prepared for a power outtage other than have lots of flashlights. Then because of all the expected wide spread damage no one knows how long it might take for the power to get back on. I really hate power outtages.

I am not organized. I just am doiing what they say on the news since they knew this was coming now for days and say it is going to be really bad. So wanted to get the possible flying furnature away and have water and food and flashlights ready for when they are needed.

Once the storm gets here the power will surely go out and then I have NO IDEA when you guys will next hear from me.

Many places along the eastern seacoast up to 12 inches of rain. On top of already saturated ground. I am sure we would send over the rain if we could.

Where are you on the north shore, nearer the mainland or nearer the northern/eastern tip? And are you a ways inland -- hope, hope!

I am on the north shore of Nassau County.Just about were they expect the eye to come over the island. Not inland. I can look out my front window and see the ocean. But unlike the areas of town here with MANDATORY evucation orders, this part were I am is high ground.

It is NYC to the west with the Brooklyn and Queen counties being part of NYC. Those are to the left of us. Then Nassau county and then Suffolk County to the right of us. The barrier Islands off the south shores of Nassau and Suffolk counties were being evacuated. They are low lying and the storm surge will put them under water for sure.

This is just amazing! I just hope you aren't without power for very long and that your place gets through it all without any or very little damage. I know we had a December dust storm here in 1977 with hurricane force winds (70-80 mph), and everything pretty much came through OK. So hopefully where you are will be sheltered enough that all your plants will be OK. Take care, Rita!

11;45 here. I am going to turn off the computer now and try to get some sleep. Whether there will be power to turn it on later is questionable. We will see. They do say power could be off for a long time in various areas.

Hope Rita and everyone else stays safe. This is the bad thing about living on any coast, we are avid weather watchers here because of events like this. Nothing worse than being without power for a long period of time, 17 days when Ivan paid us a visit.

Mom and I were without power and heat in middle of winter after an ice storm in 2004/2005. We were 20 days getting it back. Was during Chrstmas and New Years. Living in the country, we could not draw water from the well, so could not use the bathroom either. Part of the time, weather was below freezing, so put stuff from freezer onto porch to keep it frozen. Then, it warmed up to 60! we lost all the stuff in the freezer, but didn't have to keep feeding the basement wood stove. I was still working then. My Mom about went crazy here alone while I worked second shift. Pretty boring with no electric at night for one day shy of 3 weeks. Neighbors had theirs on after about 10 days. We had a blown transformer, and had to wait till they got around to individual people. Gives you a good appreciation for modern amenities!

I have a generator so I was able to run the basic necessities plus the well for water. I had stored enough fuel (120 gals) to last until we could buy some after the storm had passed. It's been seven years since we had a major storm so we are due for one. Looks like Rita is still without power.

No, Rita never lost power and felt very lucky that she pretty much escaped damage. She posted on one of these daylily threads that she felt very lucky but felt terrible that so many in her county were without power and had flooding, and that she might be done posting pictures for the year after this storm. I'm hopeful that she'll still be posting here even without pictures.

Well, I certainly will be and am posting. I am hardly going to leave ATP, I love it here.

It could take a week or more for all the power outtages to be restored. Directly after the storm our power company was saying that approx half their customer base was without power. They of course are already out there working and have reduced that number but the sheer volume means that it will take a long time. Even afew hours feels like a long time when there is no power as without TV, computer and lights there is nothing to do. I can't tell you how lucky I am that the power stayed on here.

I am so pleased to see daylilies blooming out there today as I wasn't sure what would happen after the storm. But there they are and just look like nothing unsual had happened. I even see a rebloom scape blooming on CHERRY CREAM PIE which is one of my late bloomers and has never rebloomed before.

There are lots of twigs littering the yard but no big branches down around, hurray. My sunflower which was very tall (around ten feet) is toast and snapped down lying in the pathway and I will have to haul that away. The Butterfly Bushes all have some snapped branches which I will have to cut also but Butterfly Bushes grow fast anyway and always need trimming so no major problem.

I turned the power back on to my pump in the pond so the fountain is working again and I see fish swimming around so don't think they came to any harm.

Yesterday I put my porch furnature back out as I had hauled it all inside expecting much more wind than we actually got and thinking it might all blow away. Same with the patio furnature and hanging plants. Put them away and hauled it back out. Really I just did what they told us to do on the news. They were at first forcasting winds which they said could blow out windows so I was very worried. Fortunately the winds were downgraded by the time the storm arrived. Winds must have been bad enough as Long Island is a mess of downed trees and power lines. Fortunatly since I didn't loose power I can see all this on the news. I don't want to imagine what would have happened with am even stronger storm hitting us here in the NY area.

I cut up the sunflower plant and hauled it away. Saved the seedheads that were ripe and threw them into the shrub border here for the squirrels and birds to eat.

I decided to take a drive around town this afternoon to see what I could see. The power is on here in our section of town known as "The Landing" after the name of the main road down here. But as soon as you make a turn to the section of town with the two supermarkets all the power is off. Really bad news for the supermarkets as that means all the meats and frozen foods have to be tossed. Bad news for all the residents of town too as that means the supermarkets are not open and no one can go buy food. Lots of resturants in that part of town too but all closed.
