Carol, we have had two weird cold winters and most of mine came back from the roots. This year I don't know what will happen, everything is still flush as the temps have been in the 70's/80s. They forecast February will be as unusually cold as December was unusually warm. Scary thought.

Scary indeed. I had thoughts of getting some ti plants to grow in the ground here, covered in a thick layer of mulch. I've been successfully growing a few tropicals that way, with cuttings inside for back up insurance. But . . . for instance, right now I've got confederate roses leafing out already. Blinking Usually they die down and come back from the roots and I cut them back in the spring. (I know that at my mom's place outside of Charleston, theirs come back half way down the branches. I believe that they are in zone 8b) Over the last couple of days, I'd been contemplating down them down early instead of waiting until spring, since we have been having such nice warm weather. The plants are Confused and so am I. Lots of plants that normally bloom in spring are either in bud or blooming now, and we could have freezing temps by the weekend. How Sad I am for them. What will spring be like here? Sighing!

We have azaleas in full bloom and some of my camellias are already finished. I would try the Ti's in the ground with a good mulch and be sure to take cuttings for insurance just in case those weather liars are right.

I do not understand why. I thought this was a world wide forum. I posted photos to the Database of this plant under both of its names. It was removed from 'Negra' (BTW is the name it is known by in the Cordyline Society). It, as in many Cordylines the names will vary in parts of the world and should be listed as such. JMO

Hi Scott, Sorry I didn't tree mail you yet, I got distracted.

I merged the two entries listing both names, 'Black Magic' and 'Negra'. We try to list all names used for a plant in a single entry. A search for either name will bring up this one entry by tomorrow at the latest (once the system re-samples the database). I see the entry for 'Negra' on the The International Cordyline Society and will give that name precedence. http://www.cordyline.org/index... Does that ound OK?

Ti plant (Cordyline fruticosa 'Black Magic')

Both names are legit for this plant. I doubt it is sold anywhere in the USA under the name 'Negra'. How about what is sold here in the USA as 'Pink Magic'? The ICS has it under another name, can you figure that out? How about 'Miss Andrea' and 'Mocha Latte'? I could go on. Most plants sold in Hawaii and here on the mainland will not match up with the ICS names Smiling
I guess it would be best if I did not add to the database.

Please continue to add to the database! Your contributions have added a great deal and I've been adding plants to our database as you and others post them in an effort to make it easier. The last thing I want to do is discourage anyone.

A possible solution to multiple accepted names is handling them like we do Roses, where these names are all listed as cultivars. Would doing that be appropriate?
Here's an example:

It is frustrating Scott. I bought a camellia labeled as C. handellii at the American Camellia Society gardens but here on ATP that name is a synonym. It is referred to here as Camellia transarisanensisi. It seems to me we should be using the names the professional associations use. I know enough to look beyond but so many others using the data base do not and would find it confusing.

I do not live in Australia home of the ICS and no way could match up all the names from what we have here and what names they use there. I will always call the plant I have here as 'Electra' not 'Pink Champion' looks the same but is it? Try to find other well known Cordyline names that we have here on the ICS site like 'Sherbert' 'Hawaiian Boy' and 'Fairchild Red'. For the database to be correct under the terms wanted here they will need someone from the ICS to handle that job. Take the 'Black Magic' as a example. I have been told it was known as 'Negra' and yes the photo looks like it on the ICS site, but check out the 'Black Jack' looks the same or is it? I would say it has to be all or nothing on here. I was only trying to help out the few photos that were in the Database here. Please feel free to remove the ones of mine that were posted and do not match a name on the ICS site.

OK Scott, I've put Ti Plant (Cordyline fruticosa 'Negra') back into the database and will move your two images back to that entry.

I think these Cordys of mine were labeled 'Electra' as well when I bought them. They have had a lot more white striping on the leaves at times, but right now seem to be mostly green/pink. I really like that they make seed and that the seeds turn red.

I put a handful of Cordyline seeds in this pot a few weeks back (I will track to see exactly when), and they are all coming up! By the way, I did not clean the seeds or anything, just put them in soil and covered them lightly.

Turned out it was at the very beginning of November, so about 9-10 weeks to fully germinate.

Soft look of a lily. A new leaf during the winter indoor stay.

That's beautiful Lovey dubby So delicate! The leaves are pretty too - what kind of cordyline is that?
