Make sure you wash the H2O2 off thoroughly after dousing in a water & H2O2 mix. Too much H2O2 on a forming root might stunt the roots.

Done, washed well and then added a few drops of H2O2 to the water. But that portion of scape looks really squashy. I'm gonna pot it in a few hour hoping it will be fine!

Hi folks! I have a few prolifs each year, but this year one plant in particular has really outdone itself. New to my garden last Fall, a spider, GREEN THROATED ROBIN has multiple prolifs on each scape. *Except* one scape that I set pods on. So I guess if you are wanting prolifs, don't set pods on that plant.

Lots of prolifs!

Wow!!!
really lots of prolifs!

When you air layer the prolif do you need to poke holes in the plastic bags?

I don't think so, but I am a total novice at this. Last year I put all my prolifs in cups of water, but some of them rotted. (I probably should have changed the water more frequently.) Anyway, it's my first time trying this air layering thing. I think as long as the bags are not too tight, then you don't need holes.

i know zip about air layering, but do you wrap the prolif in damp sphagnum moss? Wouldn't Saran Wrap work to enclose it??

Jessie - Great job!

I want to let you know that I have a scape with 3 pods growing on it as well as a cluster of prolifs growing near the middle of the scape. All of this on one thick scape. Some of these daylilies are bound and determined to multiply!!!! Thumbs up Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

The prolif I showed you is in a pot now. Her little sister it's still in water, no roots until now.

Cybersix, I used "sandwich" bags. Not the zip top kind, but the plain old fold-over cheap sandwich bags.

Barbalee, I filled the bags with peat moss, but I would imagine any water-holding lightweight medium would work. Saran wrap could work, but it might be difficult to seal, and/or get too tight. I think the idea with air layering is to give a little soil and water, but still allow air to get in, so the prolifs don't rot. I really think this is going to work well, since the little plants can grow while still attached to the mother plant.

Beckygardener, Thanks! And wow! Sounds like a vigorous plant. May I ask which cultivar? Might be good to use something like that when hybridizing.

Jessie - It is a seedling of Galaxy Explosion x Lily Munster. The growth was so abnormal-looking that I started a thread about it: The thread "Odd growth" in Daylilies forum

I think I will plant the prolifs right next to the mama plant to form a quick, larger clump! Big Grin

Green arrow is good at giving prolifs and is about the only daylily in my garden to multiply well. I would love to cross is with another spider type that's known for prolifs and multiplying just to see what happens when the 2 vigorous plants combine. I may have to pick up a Green Throated Robin somewhere it could make a great cross.

Thought about that list, and figured I would add my CVs that have produced prolifs this year,

'Swirling Spider'
'Sweet Dixie'
'Jolly Jester'
'Embers of Vesuvius'

A seedling with the garden name of Don's seedling because, I received it in a club, plant swap from Don. Whistling It had two prolifs.

And, my seedling that has her name reserved, but I'm still taking stats. Btw, she was three fans in the spring. Now, up to 8. Green Grin!

Edit to add one I forgot:
'Donna Mead'

I harvested some more proliferations from another NOID this morning. A few out toward the top end of some of the scapes had already died, so I thought I would go ahead and harvest the rest. Some of the scapes easily pulled away from the plant, most of them I had to cut off.
Here is the bloom from the "back fence NOID" that is my name for the plant so I can distinguish it from the many other NOIDs I have.
Thumb of 2016-08-01/Seedfork/ef54c0
Here are the proliferations I cut off of it plus the one in the clear plastic cup shown in a later photo.
Thumb of 2016-08-01/Seedfork/5e69b3
Here I added the ruler just to give some idea of the size of the plants.
Thumb of 2016-08-01/Seedfork/8bbc5a
Here they are planted in the containers, I wanted to try different containers and see if it made any difference. I did drill 1/4 inch holes in the bottoms of all the containers. I also wanted to see if proliferations did better as a group or as single fans. I have had very little luck with regular plants as single fans, so I thought prolifs might be the same way. I am hoping the one in the clear cup will allow me to monitor the root development.
