It's been windy, chilly and overcast here on the central east coast of Florida today. Our temp's are hovering at 63ºF but with the wind it sure feels a lot chillier! I'm heading out to run some errands but thought I'd share these pictures I took earlier when I was outside with the dog.

I'm enjoying all your bird photos immensely. I have no pics but wanted to share a wonderful bird story if I may.
A budgie, named MacGyver by his rescuers, was caught Jan 1st after surviving outdoors in some of this winter's most bitter temps for more than 2 months by joining a flock of sparrows!
He had been spotted over a period of 6 weeks visiting neighbourhood bird feeders and a local member of an Avian Welfare group assisted several couples with setting trap cages and teaching them some gentle behaviour modification techniques to try to lure him in before he froze to death or was killed by a predator. It was felt that MacGyver likely survived because he adapted quickly to the lifestyle of his adoptive Sparrow flock. Apparently it's not uncommon for flocks of sparrows to welcome a lost budgie, but for him to survive in temps that fell to minus 25 C during the Christmas holidays is a miracle in my mind! MacGyver is speaking fluent Sparrow, according to the Avian spokesperson who is now caring for him and trying to rehabilitate back to his former lifestyle, lol. Apparently 15 people have come forward claiming to be his owners, so hopefully he can be reunited with his true family!

Oh wow, what a story Debbie and thanks for relating it to us. Astounding that he survived those temps.!!!! Frankly, it's astounding to me that anything can survive those temps. but that's beside the point. Yay for the sparrow flock and yay for MacGyver! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

@DebbieC That is such a wonderful story! Lovey dubby I'm so glad to hear that MacGyver the Budgerigar is in a warm environment with the rescuer and I hope they find his original family. Sorry for the flock that had to lose their buddy but so happy for Macgyver, who apparently wanted to be a sparrow. It is a miracle indeed that he survived those temperatures! Birds have been making the news here in Florida! There was an editorial in the Tampa Bay Times from one of our state legislators who has introduced a bill to make the Florida Scrub Jay our official state bird. Right now it's the Mockingbird, but as he pointed out, that was set by a non-binding resolution and is not official state law. Here's hoping it gets changed!

Dad read where there were rare sightings of Wood Storks in the Keys. I got confused because for some reason when I hear "Wood Stork" my mind interprets it as "Whooping Crane". Although, when I see a Wood Stork, I know them. Saw two of them a few weeks ago - remember the pics? Well, I guess they aren't seen in the Keys much, as they prefer to stick to the Everglades. Here's an article about it: http://www.heraldtribune.com/a...

Now, if you thought I was bad at bird photos, my dad is worse. Hilarious! To be fair, his camera is not nearly as good. We're working on upgrading him. So he went to the neighborhood immediately north of us today, Land O' Lakes, FL. Sadly, I learned as a child that it's not where the butter comes from. But it is where my favorite Starbucks is located. Thumbs up He was checking out an Elephant Ear tree (woodturners call it "monkeypod") that is being taken down. His wood friends want to salvage the wood. While he was there, the owner and my dad both spotted what Dad called "bluebirds". Dad actually knows birds pretty well; he duck hunted for a long time. He said there were two and they were in the Brazilian Pepper. That stuff is highly invasive and the property owner is removing it, but it's a constant battle, especially when birds spread the seeds! Anyway, he aimed his camera in the general direction of the birds and got one photo where you can almost tell what it is. I blew it up so it's pretty pixelated, but look on the left side of the picture and tell me what you think.

That's what I said! But it's clearly a darker blue than the Blue Jays we have around here so I know it's something different.

In more news, we have a male Cardinal that takes turns attacking our side mirrors. I tried to get a picture of him but he flew into the bushes.

I'm friends with Appalachian Magazine on Facebook and they had a story today about how they're creating an elk preserve in WV in the county where my dad is from, along with two adjoining counties. It also said the refuge would help wild turkeys, grassland birds, and something called a Golden Winged Warbler. I Googled it and that is one pretty bird! Next time I'm visiting Grandma I'm going to have to hunt for it. I don't think they come to feeders because she's always feeding the Goldfinches and I think I would have noticed a yellow bird that looked "different". I'll have to research what it likes and where it hangs out.

Debbie - Loved the story you shared about MacGyver. Here's my thoughts on his recapture .... if he was around Sparrows long enough to speak sparrow, then he is a wild bird. Too bad they can't send him south here in the USA and release him to remain wild. The thought of him being "caged" after having freedom for probably quite some time, seems cruel. I always think of the zoo animals. Everyone says how well they are taken care of being in captivity, but how truly happy are these caged creatures. I know I would not like to be caged. Birds love to fly. Can you imagine not being able to really fly again.

But ... I am glad they caught and saved him from the cold Winter weather. One has to wonder if he survived that long, could he have continued to survive the rest of the Winter? My guess is that him and the sparrows roost (huddle together for warmth) at night as a flock somewhere warm (like an old barn or eaves of a building roof - heat rises). And then flying around during the day to feeders and wherever for food.

Melanie - Looks like an escaped blue Parakeet to me. https://images.search.yahoo.co...

I'm afraid that our cold weather hasn't even reached us yet; typically in January and February we can have periods of temps falling as low as the minus 40's with wind chills pushing us even lower- minus 45 to 50 is not uncommon so any chance of survival would be very dim to non existent.
I am glad that MacGyver was able to experience that freedom, at least for a while.

Is there a difference between a budgie and a parakeet or are they one in the same???

Nice story about MacGyver. One winter we had a budgie or parakeet on our feeder with the sparrows. Saw it most of the winter but didn't see it in the summer. It either moved on or it succumbed to a predator or the cold.

I think they are one and the same with "Budgie" being short for Budgerigar but there are different varieties, maybe different "families" or orders? When googling, I found these different types ... maybe they breed and hybridize Parakeets like some folks do with plants? Green Grin!

Dyzzypyxxy,
I thought maybe they called him MacGyver because he was able to reinvent himself, lol.
Hemlady, Lin,
I had no idea that budgies and parakeets were the same, even though I had a budgie growing up. I was surprised the lifespan was only listed as 5-8 years; I'm sure our budgie "Bill" lived to be well over 12 years. I still remember my Mom nursing him when he passed on.😢
