Aggravating to get this cold in April when things are starting to grow.

I looked at my peas but I can't tell if they are going to me all right or not. We just need some warmth. It is cold again today although not as cold as yesterday.

I looked at my peas this morning and they look much better. I think it helps that today is nice and warm out.

I mean I know I could replant them if I had too but these I planted in early March and they were doing so well until those two freezing nights. I don't want to start over. So I hope we are past the worst of those freezes.

Four more six pack cells of veggies planted. Well, sorta veggies as I just planted Bok Choi, Parsley, Cilantro and Dill. So one green and three herbs. Maybe I should have started the herbs sooner but oh well. I started them now so we will see what comes of it.

My friend just direct sows her basil in her garden maybe end of April. But it takes so long till she has usable plants. As to Dill when I was a child we used to simply direct sow it each year. Again around end of April, beginning of May if I am remembering correctly. My mother always had Dill growing in her garden.

I guess she was not much of an herb grower. She planted Parsley and Dill for herbs and that was it.

I have to replant mine. It doesn't seem to reseed or at least not so I get any significant amount. I am sure that is because of my heavy mulching with those Fall leaves.

Mine is in such an awkward spot, when the garden is in full bloom, that I guess it's just fortunate it's growing where it is.

I don't always remember to plant it. Last year I had no Dill or Cilantro! Should be better this year as I am really organized with the indoor seed starting. And really if you buy the herbs in the pots you get the tiniest little plant for way too much money.

My cucumber seedlings are pretty much all up. I was surprised at how quickly they popped up. My cantaloupe type melons are still coming up slowly. They might not all come up as many are old seed. But then some of those cucumbers that came up are old seed also. Not all old seed but some.

My summer squash I should have waited on before starting. They are already big enough to plant out but they will be waiting at least 3 weeks.

I wanted to go out to check the progress (if any) on my sugar snap peas, but...it's raining!

Glad the mowing team finished before the rain began.

Plans spoiled!
No rain here but it is very cloudy with a dark shy so maybe it is heading our way.

I had planned to work on my veggie garden but who knows how much will get done.

We got hit by a couple sleet storms earlier today, but I still worked all day. Built some new raised veggie garden beds for one of my regular landscape customers. Of course, the sleet held off till I picked up the loam to fill the bed with...6 yards of loam gets a LOT heavier when it's wet. Had to wheel barrow all of it in cause of the gardens location...but, such is life at work. Hope my customer and her daughter (6 yrs. old) have fun planting their garden together. They both seemed quite pleased with it. The way I designed it made use of a small hill in the yard along a fence that they otherwise could not use, so I put in tapered sides and built the front wall up to 20 inches using 5x5x8 white cedar posts. Now, the whole area is level (The 'hill' now buried) and ready to be put to use as a garden, no more wasted yard space, and getting to grow fresh food while creating memories with her little one...some parts of my job are quite rewarding. I love the instant gratification it can bring. It don't take me long to take a place that looks like crap and turn it into a yard that leaves the neighbors envious.

Next up for this customer?...She also wants a new herb garden put in around her back deck and $2500 worth of perennial bed plantings. BUT that stuff is penciled in for mid-May or so. Which is good...my current Spring clean-up list has 60 addresses on it... You know what they say...too much work coming into the company is a good problem to have.

So here are my plant tags. Both the originals which already fell off some of the plants, and my new surveyors tape plastic ribbons.

It doesn't look great but it will work.

Here I set up some of the big strong cages.

Thumb of 2016-04-10/Newyorkrita/5aae03

These here are those flimsy triangle cages which fold but I crimped them shut as that makes them stronger.

Well, you are certainly well-organized, Rita.....any tag that stays on the plant & is readable is a good one....
