Anna, they are fun to look at in a casserole-type planter dish too! Here's a gathering of roller noids:

Well we surely do love picklepuff (Sandi). Speaking of which, has anyone heard from her lately?
I believe that is the name of one of her much loved dogs. It makes me smile every time I read that name.

S. 'Marshall' is starting to color up. Hurray!
By April it will be in full technicolor.

Opps, forgot to add 'Kip'.

Technicolor? I can't wait to see that!

Here are a couple of mine that were cruelly placed in a neglected location with little sunlight and even less care. They have never been anything but green until lately. Still, I doubt their potential in such an unfavorable location. But sometimes plants surprise you.

Imagine what they would do with some sun Tim. Maybe you could move them to sun and plant a shade loving sedum in that spot?
Pacific Drama is already showing some nice color change. Hurray!

Oh my, look what it will do this summer. Lovey dubby

Thank you for the explanation and pictures, Lynn ,Greg and Bev. "Pictures are worth a thousand words! "
Yes, the rollers are adorable! So, are all of the semps that send out stolons called rollers? It seems to my untrained eye that they seem more round and prolific than some of the chicks that mine have formed.

canadanna said:So, are all of the semps that send out stolons called rollers?

I don't think that is necessarily true. The 'roller' name comes from the habit of these round chicks being able to detach from the hen and "roll" away from the mother and then start to root elsewhere. Other semps with chicks on stolons can have their chick stay awhile attached to the stolon even after establishing their own roots. Those with chicks that aren't round in shape with clustered leaves don't usually roll anywhere. Just my observations...

I have also observed a trend to plant the Jovi roller plants at the foot of a featured bonsai plant in its container. I've seen this at bonsai shows and bonsai shops. A new way to introduce rollers to the public?

Great explanation Bev.

Anna, once you have some of all three forms you will never get them mixed up again.

Lynn not necessarily true, there are some heufs that at times look like a regular semp until they begin to propagate! I have several young Heuf Jade and they only have a single rosette right now and look just like semps I tip my hat to you.

Even then you can tell by the leaf thickness and texture that they are heuffs. It took me a few years once I started growing them to be able to tell. Even the tiny seedlings have a different look.

Yes the seedlings do look different. They still trick me sometimes. Have searched though the data base looking for a name only to find it's a heuff. I may still have Sandi's E-mail, my try she if she is coming to clinic.

I think I need some rollers! Let me know when you start to offer in the classifieds. Drooling
One other confusing thing is the term Bev used.."Jovi rollers" Also want to know if you drilled holes in that casserole dish?

Many of us still call them by the old name of Jovibarba, instead of Sempervivum. I think we are in hopes that they will separate them again.
So the shortened name is Jovi, thus Jovi rollers, because all Jovi are not rollers. Big Grin
Hope I haven't totally confused you Ann?
