Monarda can be pulled right out of the ground, stalk by stalk if you wish, with the roots and replanted anywhere. I have given away divisions like this and they do smashingly.
Some Monarda are known not to come true from seed.
Every year I just pull out the spread, growing where I don't want them, and move somewhere else.

Janice, I think what Juli is afraid of is if she puts Round-up on one, the whole bunch will die.

Me, I dunno.

I also like the 'Eilers' - one of these days I will get some. Wonder if they cross with the others....

Sorry, Juli. Reread your post. Don't know about the Roundup.
Thanks, Sheryl.

Ok, then I will just try my best to pull out what I do not want. It is SO frustrating not being able to grip to weed and pull stuff out! Some days I can, but some days... Well... Blinking

I do use gloves with gripping things on them and that helps some.

But, darn it - I refuse to give up!

I used to grow monarda on a hill where it really struggled. Now, it is in a much smaller bed, with improved soil, and mixed perennials. This was it's second summer. It has really taken off! Hummingbirds have loved it!

Yes, Juli. I leave mine for the Hummingbirds, too, as it is really too tall for the bed it is in. But the hummers are fun to watch there, so I leave it. Smiling

The first yr my monarda bloomed ('Raspberry Wine') a hummingbird flew right past it to a hosta blossom in another bed. 'Hey' I said, 'I planted that for you'. It ignored me. Very peeved. Thumbs down

Too Funny about the hummer! This is the first year my monarda has bloomed, and I didn't see much hummingbird or butterfly action around it. But I've mostly seen the hummers in the past few weeks, and my monarda is mostly done. I finally deadheaded it and now I see regrowth... lesson learned, I will deadhead more aggressively next year for regrowth! As for pulling it, it seemed this spring when I was pulling it up everywhere to contain it to one small area that some were connected by roots, and some were individual. I'm guessing it spreads both ways? That may be dependent on variety though.

I think it was in the book "The Well-Tended Perennial Garden"
https://www.amazon.com/dp/0881928038/
that I learned to pinch back the monarda, phlox, etc. First an over all pinch, then again a few weeks later - pinching only part of the stems. This was the first year I tried it. I think it really did extend the bloom season, and they didn't flop as much.

I love that book! Thumbs up
