I HAVE that book Juli... must be time for a refresher read now that I actually have some perennnials to tend! For the longest time all I did was kill perennials. I guess I just finally figured out what will grow here in this heat!

Monarchs are here! I was beginning to despair, as I do every year, that we wouldn't have any. Then, when I just about can't stand it anymore we start seeing some in late August or September. Have 4 in Chrysalides in my office now, sent about 8 cats to my DD's school, and a couple to a neighbor. Then hopefully they'll all be released into lovely gardens, having been pampered away from all the other evil insects out there Whistling Started doing this a couple years ago as an interesting thing for my daughter... but I think its all me now!

At least they're pretty! Haven't done Sunflowers in a few years... I'm so bad with staking I need to do dwarf varieties if anything. Love that pic Mike!

We missed the floods of Irene but the currant pressure system is giving lots of moisture and constant rain, sometimes hard ,sometimes light.
Its low and cloudy today and we are supposed to get some drying in lower NYS.

Veronica, your gardens are gorgeous!

Janice, I love that Lespideza! I wonder if it's hardy here?

Mike, that pic is perfection- love it!

Oh, yes, Neal, the Lespedeza is VERY hardy there! It is an amazing Fall bloomer. Have 2 varieties (of thunburgii, I believe. Hardy Zones 4-8)

Thanks, Janice! I'll be on the hunt for those, color like that at this time of year is wonderful! Are they drought tolerant? I think of legumes as being tolerant of adverse conditions, it would be great if they don't require much maintenance.

No water, no maintenance, they are one tough plant! We even moved one in the high heat of summer this year and it is fine.
